The worst engines you’ve experienced

Car enthusiasts across the country have a lot of opinions when it comes to engines. Some swear by certain engines, but others never want to go near them again. We recently asked our community what they think are some of the worst engines out there and according to our readers, these are their least favorite picks.

First, the majority of respondents agreed that the GM Quad 4 engine is one of their least favorite. This DOHC inline-four engine was produced between 1988 and 2001 and was plagued with issues such as head gasket failures, oil consumption problems and much more.

Another engine mentioned quite often was the Volkswagen 1.8T 20-Valve Engine, which was used in many 1999 and later Volkswagen models including Jetta, Passat, Beetle and Golf. This engine had numerous issues with coolant leaks in addition to its tendency to overheat quickly in hot weather conditions.

The Chrysler 2.7L V6 engine is another model that wasn’t well-received among car enthusiasts due to its tendency for premature timing belt failure as well as a lack of power when compared to other V6 engines on the market.

Finally, the Subaru 2.5L H4 boxer engine has long been met with criticism from enthusiasts due to its poor performance during cold starts and sluggish acceleration at low speeds. These issues were especially prominent on pre-2002 model years where they could be so severe they could leave drivers stranded on side roads or highways with no option but to call for help.

Overall, these four engines seem to be universally disliked among car enthusiasts due to their unreliability, lack of power or overall poor performance. If you’re looking for a reliable vehicle that won’t leave you stranded on the side of the road or let you down in terms of performance, then it may be best to avoid these four models altogether!
