"2018 Fiat Abarth 124 Spider
""With its unique mix of Italian style and Japanese engineering, the Mazda MX-5 Miata based Fiat 124 Spider is a sushi roll stuffed in cannelloni. It's more than a bunch of new badges, however, as the 124 Spider sports an exclusive turbocharged Fiat engine, unique suspension tuning, and a more upscale interior. The pick of the 124 Spider range is still the rowdy Abarth version. You could add thousands of dollars in options, but you'll have the same driving enjoyment either way, thanks to the Abarth's more sporting attitude."" Car and Driver, 2019
For consignment, a 2018 Fiat Abarth 124 Spider with a title verified 71,793 actual miles. In 2018, CarMagazine.co.uk wrote, ""The Fiat 124's been Abarth'd. After years of hard work on hatchbacks and city cars, you get the feeling Fiat's performance subsidiary couldn't wait to get its hands on a front engined, rear wheel drive two seater.""
Exterior
Move over Miata, this Italian rendition is dressed in a dramatic presentation of Hypnotique Red, a fancy twist on ""hypnotic"" but there's no way you'll be lulled to sleep by this bright speedster. The argent gray mirrors really pop and are complemented by the matching windshield frame and 17-inch wheels, here wearing ZR rated tires and the epic Abarth scorpion on the center caps. The nicely contoured hood and subtle spoiler on the decklid set this apart from the more common Miata and the headlights take on a more intimidating stare. Our black canvas soft top and plastic window are in fine shape and pick up on the black rocker panels and rear valance. Imperfections include rock chips, overspray, rock spray, a corner scratch and scuff, and other minor scratches.
Interior
Things start off somewhat basic with black door panels with polished handles, clean, efficient, and simple, leading to tuck and roll inserts in black leather, red stitching, topped by a tall headrest that wears the ABARTH name. Light wear is noticed on both seats along with some compression on the drivers. The ergonomic sport steering wheel has adequate thumb controls and leads to an exciting instrument cluster that puts a red faced electronic tachometer between two black faced units. The dash is stitched red and a center screen shows navigation, AM/FM radio that is Bluetooth and XM compatible. Mounted next to the stout shifter are controls for the screen and even a cupholder. Clean black carpet floods the floor and the finished trunk is lined with charcoal panels.
Drivetrain
Under the hood is a busy little engine bay holding a 1.4 liter DOHC turbocharged inline four cylinder with 164 horsepower. It's mated to a 6-speed manual transmission that routes power to the rear wheels through a limited slip differential with 3.58 gears.
Undercarriage
We have a clean underside with some typical metal oxidation but fully dry and solid conditions. Power disc brakes are supplied to all four wheels and a single exhaust runs through the original muffler which emits twin exhaust tips and four polished tips. The fully independent suspension includes double wishbone up front and multi link in back.
Drive-Ability
No complaints here as this is a quick, nimble, and capable sports car, and this one has air conditioning and air bags to improve your driving experience. The seats are comfortable and the cabin is accommodating while the exhaust note is one you want to keep going. All functions availed of this little Italian operate as expected. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
This babied bambino is an eye-catching, attractive car that is unlikely to be mistaken for something else by those who know. Italian sports cars have a long, storied history that include names like Alfa Romeo, Maserati, Ferrari and yes, Fiat. Produced only from 2016 to 2020, we think this one might be on its way to classic status. For now, it's a great daily driver or weekend toy.
