Cruisin Classics is pleased to present this 2017 Smyth Performance G3F Roadster. If you're looking for a sporty little 2-seat roadster that is fun to drive, quick, great on gas, and totally unique - this is the car for you. Smyth Performance is a company started by one the original founders of Factory Five Racing, Mark Smith. Just like Factory Five, Smyth manufactures ""build it yourself"" component car kits. This particular model is designed to transform a 4-door VW Jetta into a mid-engine 2-seat open-air roadster. The donor car for this build was a 2004 Jetta TDI that was purchased back in 2005 by the same folks that later transformed it into a G3F (Go Green Go Fast). The kit itself cost $7,900 and when the build was finished in 2017 it was titled as an ASVE (Assembled Vehicle). We're told that only 15 of these kits were produced, making this an exceptionally rare example. Let's take a closer look at this cool little car...
To turn a Jetta into a G3F, the engine and transaxle are moved from the front of the car back to the rear – making it a mid-engine rear wheel drive car. The original floorpans, steering wheel, complete dash, and vehicle safety systems (like ABS and airbags) were left in place. The frame was enhanced with rigid subframe bracing and laser-cut aluminum inner panels were addeed. The gas tank was removed and replaced with a fuel cell that is now located up front under the hood. The key fob still opens the trunk and locks/unlocks the doors – a nice extra. The entire exterior (except the doors, which were cut down, and the trunklid) has been replaced with new fiberglass panels. The look of the new body is curvaceaous and stylish, sure to turn heads wherever it goes. The body is painted Spice Red Metallic (same color as the original Jetta) and after 9 years of being driven the paint is good driver quality. Up front is an agressively sloped clam-shell forward lifting hood with power-bulges, crystal-clear Celica GT headlight assemblies, a Smyth badge at the nose, and a black chin spoiler. Under the hood is the fuel cell with a marine fill-cap, a radiator with dual electric fans, the battery, and the power brake booster and master cylinder. The windshield is from a Dodge Neon and it features a sporty rake and a single large windshield wiper. Looking at the side view, there are faux side-vents with black painted accents, dual body-color side mirrors (from an '84 Camaro), and a fiberglass tonneau with speedster humps just behind the cockpit (ahead of the trunk). This cover lifts up from the rear to provide access to the relocated engine and it has a third brake light integrated between the humps. It is important to note that there are no windows in the doors and there is no roof – it is a fair-weather only car. The builders have a prototype roof for the car (that is available with the car if you'd like), but it would need a great deal of work to make it fit the car properly. At the rear of the car is the original Jetta trunk lid with ""G3F"", ""VW"", and ""TDI"" badging flanked by round taillights from a Chevy Cobalt. Peeking out from underneath are two chrome exhaust tips. This roadster rolls down the road on a set of highly desirable Enkie RP-F1 wheels all wrapped in Nitto Motivo tires.
Pop open the rear tonneau cover to reveal a clean engine bay with the original 1.9 litre turbo diesel inline four cylinder VW engine. These engines are well known for their longevity, great gas mileage, and peppy turbo boost. This engine has the EGR deleted and the builder has added a PD150 intake that greatly increases air flow. The engine has a Stage 2 Darkside tune as well. Looking around, you'll find that the car is equipped with power steering, power 4-wheel disc brakes, and A/C (all components present and hooked up, but the system is not charged). The 4 cyl TDI engine is mated up to the original 5-speed manual transmission – making for a fun driving experience. With a total weight of less than 2,700 lbs., this car is fantastic on gas (around 70mph/gal freeway) and quite quick when you get into the turbo. The odometer on the car reads 162,631 and we believe that to be the actual mileage on the engine, transmission, and remaining Jetta parts.
When you swing open the drivers door you'll see that two criss-crossed support bars have been added just above the sill to increase structural rigidity. The heated tan leather-look seats are in very good condition and they're equipped with RCI 4-point safety belts. The tan carpet and carpeted floormats are in good overall condition with some light wear. The drivers door still offers power locks and an armrest as well as an aftermarket speaker, but the passenger door lacks the armrest. A center console splits the bucket seats and offers a fold-down armrest, cup holders, an emergency brake lever, a 12-volt charging port, and the shifter for the 5-speed with a stitched black boot. Ahead of the driver is the original black leather-wrapped Jetta steering wheel with working stereo controls and an airbag. The tan and black dash ahead is still 100% Jetta. Framed by the steering wheel are a 5 ½ K tachometer, a 160mph speedometer, and gauges for temp and fuel. The wiper works as it should using the factory controls. The stock Monsoon AM/FM/CD stereo works as it should and it plays through the door speakers and an an additional set mounted in the side panels behind the seats. The 3-dial HVAC system cranks out heat with a strong fan, but the A/C will need to be charged to work. Inside the glovebox are the original VW owners manuals. Behind the seats you'll find a floor-mounted fire extinguisher and a small amount of storage space. Around back in the trunk there is a fitted car cover and a prop for the tonneau. Included with the car is a folder full of build receipts and we can provide you with a link to photos of the build.
If you're looking for a fun and economical open-air roadster that turns heads everywhere it goes, then this is the ride for you! This G3F is sure to be a hit at any car show – especially VW events! Give our friendly staff a call and make this totally unique turbo coupe your own!

Here at Cruisin Classics, we understand that you have many options when choosing where you purchase your classic, muscle or collector car and we would like to thank you for considering us.
Cruisin Classics has been buying and selling cars for many years.. The majority were your average daily drivers but our passion has always been in muscle cars and hot rods so in 1996, Cruisin Classics built a 56,000 sq.ft. showroom located in Columbus, OH that they still operate out of today. All of our vehicles are hand-picked and selected to ensure they fit our inventory. This facility is now arguably one of the best-stocked collections for sale in the US housing hundreds of unique automobiles all under one roof. We invite you to our facility! There is something for everybody when you come to visit.
After years of serving as central Ohio's premiere classic car dealer at Cruisin Classics Auto Sales, we saw an unfulfilled need that was not being met for our clients. We loved helping match our clients with the classic and American muscle cars of their dreams. But what about after the purchase? We recognized that our clients needed a trusted resource to continue to care for their classic vehicles. It did not sit well with us that our valued clients and their incredible vehicles were being outsourced to, sometimes several, third-party resources for maintenance and performance needs. We also wanted to help the many people that we had met over the years who already owned classic vehicles which were in need of restoration, upgrades, and maintenance. Too often, we were seeing vehicles with so much potential left sitting in garages under covers because their owners did not know who to turn to for such specialized work. It is our goal to offer our clients a truly comprehensive, seamless, and enjoyable classic car ownership experience, from purchase to maintenance to storage. Thus, Cruisin Classics Performance Center was born. We have cherry-picked the most talented, experienced, and passionate team of technicians to offer our clients a true one-stop-shop solution for any and all of their classic car needs. Our honest business model has lasted almost 25 years to date and Cruisin Classics has a worldwide reputation as one of the best in the business.
Outside of the shop, this business has afforded us the opportunity to be actively involved in our community and fulfill our goal of supporting several local and national organizations that hold a special place in our hearts. We are proud sponsors of the Kiwanis Club of Columbus, the Columbus USO, Honor Flight, Special Olympics, multiple car clubs, and much more.
In conclusion, 100% customer satisfaction is our main goal. Always has been.. always will be. We would like to invite anyone considering one of our vehicles to come to our beautiful facility to inspect the car in person or send somebody on your behalf.
