For consignment, a 2008 Smart Fortwo coupe with a title verified 38,528 actual miles. This garage kept little roustabout is the perfect antidote, according to Car and Driver, for the motorcycle drivers who need to check their emails but shouldn't on two wheels. We think it's got greater appeal for denizens of small towns, college campuses and planned communities.
Exterior
Car and Driver points out ""thanks to its upright stance, the Fortwo offers 40 inches of headroom-within an inch of a Cadillac Escalade"". That interior space is made evident by its outward appearance; more tall than wide with zero overhangs beyond the three lug 15-inch wheels. It's essentially a slightly extended cabin on wheels, the door delineated by an attractive black band that rises at an angle to meet the translucent black roof and pillars. The full sized door handle gets absorbed into the design and Smart artists even put a tiny spoiler out back and sporty air intakes on the rear fender. Everything else is Crystal White which allows the tail lights to express themselves boldly and the front grille's smile to greet onlookers. Imperfections include some dullness to part of the roof and chips and scratches throughout.
Interior
Car and Driver says the interior is nicely executed, so in we go to get a taste of space efficiency. We're met with a palette of Khaki and Black, geometrically positioned on the handsome door panels with all the usual integrated elements. The tall bucket seats have angular pattern ornamentation and a black insert on the back and both seats present nicely. A tidy steering wheel fronts a color coordinated dash with a large, white faced speedometer in front while the clock and tachometer are perched on top of the dash. The center is a clean assembly of vents, switchgear and an AM/FM/CD player. The combination of textured tan, glossy tan and matte black surfaces is well done. The shifter and ignition port come at the top of the boxed unit between the seats over black carpet and Weathertech mats. The smoked glass canopy can be covered and the rear cargo area is narrow but tall and protected by another Weathertech mat.
Drivetrain
Under the cargo floor is a 1.0 liter DOHC inline 3 cylinder engine capable of 70 horsepower. The fuel injected powerplant is mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission that keeps power to the rear wheels and 4.53 gears.
Undercarriage
Generally clean but definitely driven, the underside is mostly comprised of plastic belly pans that cover a good bit of real estate. Power disc brakes are on all four wheels and the single exhaust runs through original equipment on its way to a singular exit. Suspension consists of Macpherson struts up front and a DeDion axle on the semi-independent rear. Our 155/60R15 tires have a mid 2021 date code. No rust nor errant fluids were found underneath.
Drive-Ability
Our above average size had no problem feeling comfortable inside the Smart, and though people might think of it as a glorified golf cart, it's much more capable, certainly road worthy, and has the power and grip to instill some confidence. No wonder you see them on the highways! Meanwhile, all functions in and around the car work as intended, and it's off to find some space, and not much is needed, to display it on the showroom floor! While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
If you've been to a beach town recently, you'll note that miniature cars and golf carts are the vehicles to be seen in now! The cred once reserved for G-wagons and Range Rovers has shifted to which kind of cool, pocket sized car you can take to the restaurant.
