"2007 Mazda MX5 Grand Touring
""That which was formerly called Miata and is now officially renamed the Mazda MX-5 joins the growing list of mid price convertibles, (the Pontiac G6, the VW Eos), offering a power folding hardtop. Who ever thought Mazda's bare essential roadster would get so...embellished? Apparently, the answer is Mazda, which is answering the call of American buyers to make its cutie pie a little less little, a bit more powerful, and come with more nonessential luxuries."" Car and Driver, February 2007
For consignment, a 2007 Mazda MX5 Miata Grand Touring with a title verified 13,893 actual miles. Annual oil changes, (since 2021), implies this car has been well maintained and the low mileage indicates it was likely not a daily driver.
Exterior
If you remember the first gen poster car, you'll know that red is one of the most popular Miata colors, here in two stages of True Red, augmented by the hood bulge doused in matte black and the fiberglass top wrapped in it for an especially sporty profile. And speaking of profile, from the side, the 17-inch black wheels really give this car personality and allow the red brake calipers to shine through in a color coordinated presentation. Those wheels are wrapped in Bridgestone tires with a mid 2023 date code, and we do note some curb rash on a couple of them. Other imperfections include some rock spray on lower panels, various scratches and chips, a chip in the windshield, and a mottled finish and peeling to the top wrap. A black rocker stripe adds to the overall aesthetics of the car and the Altezza style tail lights are also a tasteful design choice.
Interior
The black door panels are almost artful in their simplicity and use of circles and round hardware and both are in good condition. From there, smooth black leather bucket seats also show well split by a fairly wide center console that's home to a stout shifter. Up front, it's an ergonomic treat for the senses with a comfortable and well equipped steering wheel fronting a smartly arranged instrument cluster. More circular features are present in the center stack that arches into a piano black band across the dashboard and features an AM/FM/CD radio and clear A/C control knobs. MX-5 branded mats cover the black carpet and the fully finished trunk is roomy and clean.
Drivetrain
A clean engine bay houses the 2.0 liter DOHC inline four cylinder, putting out 168 horsepower and mated here to a 6-speed manual transmission. Power is routed sports car style to the rear axle with 4.10 gears.
Undercarriage
Clean conditions prevail underneath with some typical time catalyzed surface rust. Four wheel power disc brakes are onboard and the single exhaust system runs through a stainless steel muffler which emits two chrome tail tips for visual balance. The fully independent suspension includes coil springs up front and multi link with Chapman struts in back.
Drive-Ability
The Miata's reputation plays out in full force on the test loop where it proves to be peppy, ground hugging, and responsive. There are reasons the model has lasted so long and this '97 demonstrates all of them! Functionally, this red roadster scores 100 on our test. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
In its first foray into hard top conversion, the MX-5 scores big in '97 and this racy example is a nice testament to the brand, coming to you with super low mileage and at the same time, a few chips and scratches that allay any fear you'll cause the first! It's Zoom Zoom time and here's the weekend toy you've been searching for.
