"2007 Ford Mustang Saleen S281 Convertible
""Stephen M. Saleen, is the founder and CEO of Saleen Automotive. This automotive visionary founded Saleen in 1984 with a purposeful goal of bringing race proven performance to the street. Mr. Saleen's entrepreneurial business plan laid the groundwork for an entire new industry of design, engineering, manufacturing, and sales of high performance vehicles that were race proven and marketed for sales through showrooms nationwide."" For consignment, a 2007 Ford Mustang Saleen S281 coupe with a title verified 21,833 actual miles. This is one of just 122 supercharged convertibles produced in 2007 and as documented by Saleen, one of one optioned as it is of the 1,258 Saleens produced that year. Saleen's letter as well as the window sticker comes with the car.
Exterior
You don't mind if we start at the back, do you? This is where the Saleen clearly differentiates itself from mere mortal Mustangs. The back deck wears a ribbed black panel with the third part of the three part tail lights covered with a matching plate and that change alone sets this car apart. Saleen takes the lower valance and includes splitter slots and center exit dual oval tips. Up above, the rear wing hugs close to the deck lid, and side cladding adds some ground hugging styling. The front is enhanced with flush marker lights, and wind defeating aerodynamics around a solid black grille with the car's individual number is represented on the front bumper. Heat extractor vents are cut into the hood and the coveted supercharged emblems reside on the fenders. 20-Inch chrome Saleen wheels are hard to miss and wear their original tires. Remarkably well preserved, this example does have a few imperfections that include minor inclusions, scratches, chips throughout, paint runs, chin scrapes, and some paint work in the driver's side.
Interior
The standard GT door panels are sufficient to serve this special edition and do so with clean lines and in great condition, with a touch of this gen's failing adhesive on the leather insert. The black leather bucket seats feature a ribbed center column, Saleen embroidery on the uppers, and finned head restraints. The rear seats share the design and each are in nice shape. The Saleen logo appears on the center of the steering wheel and the center stack is your standard fare with the Shaker 500 system for the AM/FM/CD radio and dials for the climate control. Boost and air temp gauges are perched on top of the dash and a straight handled shifter resides in the center console. Weather mats cover the carpet but the S281 branded pieces are in the truck, which also houses the speaker for the Rockford Fosgate Punch sound system. It's all clean here and is capped off by the numbered plaque on the dash.
Drivetrain
Saleen does its magic in the engine bay and labels it as such, a 4.6 liter three valve supercharged V8 capable of 465 horsepower and mated to a Tremec 3650 5-speed manual transmission routing the herd of horses to the Ford 8.8"" MaxGrip differential with 3.73 gears and TracLoc. The engine bay presents with show ready aplomb.
Undercarriage
Clean conditions are found with some typical surface rust on the usual components. The dual exhaust runs large and in charge under the car, connecting with MagnaFlow mufflers that have an unusual configuration. When you get on it, the exhaust bypasses half the muffler and dumps underneath, but when cruising around town, they go through the full muffler and out the center exit. Meanwhile, suspension consists of Macpherson struts up front and a 3 link with coil springs and a panhard bar in back. Power disc brakes are at all four wheels.
Drive-Ability
This muscle bound Mustang looks and sounds fantastic while delivering a potentially spirited ride and while we ride with the black canvas top up, visions of coastal highway runs fill our head. Handling is assured and obvious power is underfoot, and the view of those vents on the hood is almost as satisfying! All functions on this special edition work as intended. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
Based on the Saleen experience here at the mall, they are highly sought after models that find a new owner in short order, and this is a very fine example. Don't hold your horses if interested!
