"2003 Ford Model A Phaeton
""As a rare and wonderful variant in the evolution of the car, phaetons and their convertible sedan cousins are highly valued today. While phaetons are typically an open four door with no side windows and a separate windshield, a convertible sedan is a later iteration with an integral windshield and roll up windows. Phaetons usually shared the separate windshield and posts, cowl, and front doors of their roadster counterparts. To that, rear doors and a tub were added, with the result becoming a phaeton."" Hagerty.com, May 2018
For consignment, a 2003 Ford Phaeton with a title verified 19,423 actual miles. This is a fiberglass bodied street rod on an aftermarket chassis, built and titled in 2003.
Exterior
No missing this car in the mall with its slab sided body and long front fenders glowing with two stage Sublime Green paint with contrasting red wire wheels, helping create a vibrant visual variant! The car sits fantastically low with a modern stance that could not even have been imagined in the 20's and 30's when phaetons roamed the gravel roads and city streets, and with staggered size tires, this one has a slightly raked stance. The grille fronts long, louvered engine covers, a wide cowl, and an upright windscreen. The tan canvas top is the only thing between you and sky and retracts to a folded stack behind the rear seats. With the top up, a third brake light is seen flush to the body while vintage style tail lights sit low and flank the body colored gas tank. Imperfections are few and include some touched up marks on that tank, small chips on a door, and a chip on the radiator shell.
Interior
Tan vinyl door panels dress the doors, including the rear coach style ports and all four present cleanly. Vinyl bench seats are configured true to the honored time period and remain clean and intact. A wooden Lecarra steering wheel on a tilt column forms an attractive handle and leads to a body colored dash with spun aluminum faceplate on a center instrument cluster with VDO gauges. Special attention is given to the footwells that are lined with pleated tan vinyl and the Lokar shifter rises from the floor with low pile tan carpet and gray mats hemmed by even more tan for a handsome presentation.
Drivetrain
Behind the covers is a good looking 350ci V8 with a GMPP intake manifold and Holley 4-barrel carb with coated headers heading south. It's backed by a TH350 3-speed automatic transmission that routes power to a Ford 9"" in back.
Undercarriage
Some green paint found its way to the axle and linkage, brightening up this clean underside where dual exhaust runs through glasspack style mufflers and exits behind the fenders. Disc brakes are utilized up front and drums in back while suspension consists of transverse leaf spring and hairpins up front and coil overs with a 4 link in back.
Drive-Ability
The comfortable cab affords vast visibility as we sublimely roll this windowless joy ride onto the test loop where it doesn't disappoint in providing a fun experience, a well running drivetrain, and straight tracking. All functions on this 2003 build operate as intended and we bring this bright ride back inside. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
This is a unique and capable ride that was clearly purpose built, and that purpose is fun! It's a cheerful, open air ride that would be ideal for parades, car shows, or weekly cruises to wherever!
