More than 110,000 Dodge Dakotas were sold in the United States in 2003 in a variety of configurations. But the spotlight and hype at Dodge centered around a wild concept called the Tomahawk, a 500 horsepower V10 equipped motorcycle with two rear wheels and a Dodge claimed ""potential top speed of nearly 400 miles per hour."". It was also described as an ""icon of extreme thinking"" Dodge prided itself on in light of the Viper and Magnum SRT-8.
For consignment, a 2003 Dodge Dakota SLT 4x2 quad cab pickup with a title verified 118,288 actual miles. SLT was a mid level trim package, one of four that included base, R/T, and Sport versions. This super clean truck is ready to haul some goods in the bed and a crew in the cabin for extra hands on deck!�
Exterior
There's no mistaking the Dodge nose which has family ties to the Viper, Avenger, and just about every other Dodge product in 2003. The clean design is best viewed from the side, where Graphite Slate Gray Metallic rides over the lower band of Bright Silver Metallic and rear passengers are afforded decent sized doors for the spacious rear space. Six lug 16-inch Dodge wheels, also formed by genetics, carry 245/70R16 tires with a mid 2022 date code. The bed is lined with a rugged plastic liner and is amazingly clean and easily viewed by the solid rear window. The plastic chrome grille, the black trim, and model decals are all in great shape. In fact, we could not find any exterior imperfections, evidence that this truck was driven and loved.�
Interior
Cloth inserts on gray molded plastic door panels greet the driver and passengers and provide plenty of storage up front. Gray cloth also covers the bucket seats and conditions counter belie, in a good way, the mileage on the truck, with only minor compression to the driver's seat and near mint condition on all the rest. The steering wheel does wear a cover and frames a simple instrument cluster behind a plexiglass wall while the center stack integrates an AM/FM/CD and cassette factory radio over your basic A/C panel. A center console bin on the hump includes storage and cupholders over low pile gray carpet. Up above, is a foam formed headliner in good shape.�
Drivetrain
Under the bulbous hood we find a clean Mercedes derived 4.7 liter Magnum V8, rated at 235 horsepower and fueled via electronic injection, mated to a 5-45RFE 5-speed automatic transmission sending power to the rear axle with 3.55 gears. Bright yellow marks items in the bay where maintenance is conducted and plastic shrouds cover critical components.
Undercarriage
Typical surface rust and mostly dry condition greet us underneath and this 22 year old truck has been well preserved and probably never got wet, especially in winter. A single exhaust flows through a stock style muffler and suspension is made up of coil springs in front and leaf springs in the back. The undersides of all four doors are clean and rust free.�
Drive-Ability
What's not to love here? A clean cloth, analog Dakota that has obviously been garaged and maintained and now seeks a new home. Our test drive reveals that 235 horsepower is plenty and this straight tracking RWD truck also provides good visibility and nice height while not being over the top. And as we would have expected, all functions operate just as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
If there's one thing every household needs, it's a pickup truck. Sure, your SUV will carry a lot, but do you really want to put mulch, fluids, and swap meet finds in the back of your Range Rover? And as much as we'd hate to see this truck get dirty, it's still a truck and that plastic liner in the bed cleans up nice! Plus you can take the kids along to learn about Lowes runs, negotiating at garage sales, and loading hay bales for the Halloween display. Or simply drive this clean truck to work. Just don't tell your friends, or they will hit you up to help with their college bound kid's move out.�
