2002 Firebird Trans Am WS6 Convertible
Trans Am, Grand National, LeMans, just a few of the cars named after auto races or racing series. The Trans Am series was created in 1966 by the Sports Car Club of America president at the time. American V8 coupes were known to compete in the races although the overall winner of the first race was driving an Alfa Romeo GTA.
For consignment, a one owner 2002 Firebird Trans Am WS6 with a title verified 87,856 actual miles. While over the course of production of the final gen T/A, black was by far the most common color yet in 2002, only 347 black convertibles were produced, and this is one of 217 with an automatic.
Exterior
Our car wears two stage black paint in glossy glowing glory and is adorned with a unique stripe package in silver that colors the headlight buckets, nose, hood bulge, decklid and rear wing, and bumper cover. RAM AIR is written where the cowl meets the windshield. The nose of the car is a symmetrical sight to behold with inset fog lights, hidden headlights, and those enormous nostril like air intakes gives the car the character of a fire breathing dragon. A steeply raked windshield leads to the edge of the canvas convertible top which presents in very nice condition. The rear wing is like a shelf that hugs the curved rear window and shoots backwards to ward off turbulence while keeping the tail planted. The honeycomb pattern in the tail lights is a nod to the Trans Am heritage motif and the quad exhaust tips are distinctive and forever cool. 17-inch five spoke American Racing Torque Thrust wheels in chrome bump up the hot rod factor of this F-body and wear staggered size tires. This pampered Poncho shows chin scrapes as the only noted exterior imperfections.
Interior
Standard black door panels with white inserts and gray buttons show little wear while the seats are covered in gray and black neoprene skins including the rear 2+2 seats with their deep bottoms. The beefy black steering wheel is sculpted for good grip and also covered and houses more gray buttons for radio control. A standard dash continues the monochromatic interior, and the center stack features large, gray plastic buttons for the AC controls while an aftermarket JVC AM/FM/CD has been added. The stock radio will come with the car. The straight shifter is in the center console and its leather clad knob is a nice contrast with the factory interior. Low pile black carpet is essentially flawless and protected by weather rubber mats and the deep cargo area is lined with gray cloth panels for a finishing touch.
Drivetrain
The 5.7 liter LS1 V8 under the sculpted hood wears a cold air intake with dual filter and generates a dyno proven 360.08 horsepower. This one is equipped with a 4L60E 4-speed automatic transmission which heads to the 10 bolt rear with 3.42 gears and Positraction. Power disc brakes at all four corners help slow the car down. Headers begin the exhaust process.
Undercarriage
Driver quality underneath with typical surface rust on uncoated components and just residual oil on the pan and rear differential and clear knuckles. Dual exhaust starts at headers, join into one big pipe, find a stainless steel muffler, then split to exit via chrome tips. Coil suspension occupies the front independent suspension while a torque arm and coil springs live in the back.
Drive-Ability
Not only do headers add a few ponies, but they create a richer sound in the exhaust, which we hear when we crank the Firebird to life. Dry tarmac awaits as we put the car into drive and take off around our test loop. Enhanced by the cold air intake, this naturally aspirated car provides plenty of power under foot, tracks straight, and stays grounded around turns. Other than the power locks being finicky, the functional items in the car operate as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
Yes, 2002 was the last year for the Trans Am and unlike the Camaro, it's not coming back as Pontiac shut its doors in 2010. Here's an opportunity to get a car you missed out on, a final year Trans Am with the desirable WS6 package, a canvas top that does down and a few more horses in the stable than your average Trans Am. Summer's here and the time is right, for prancing in the street!
