"2001 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra Coupe
""The newfound quickness and consistent engine performance are only part of the story as the Cobra has left its crude ponycar roots and joined the ranks of competent sports coupes. The floaty, not sure what the tires are doing feeling that has plagued Mustangs is gone. Now you can point the Cobra exactly where you want and assume it will go there. The car feels appropriately firm without being harsh, and it never bounces off bumps or potholes."" Car and Driver, July 2001.
For consignment, a 2001 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra couple with a title verified 27,826 actual miles. Just 3,867 Cobra coupes were built in 2001 and of them, just 347 of them were yellow, each with some subtle exterior cues that set them apart from the GT's.
Exterior
Coming at you, it's the front fascia that is unique to the Cobra, housing low, wide fog lights coupled with air intakes. From the side, this Zinc Yellow beauty displays the coveted Cobra emblem and wears 17-inch SVT Cobra wheels, five spoke chrome beauties that wear 275/40ZR17 tires. Out back, Cobra is stamped into the bumper cover and while you sometimes see this filled in with paint, this one remains subtle in monochromatic yellow. Normally angle cut polished exhaust tips appear here, but on our car, billet style tips provide a unique platform for the exhaust. This is a clean and well preserved car and the only imperfections we find are some typical chin scrapes and a scuff on the rear bumper cover.
Interior
There were only two interior color options for the '01 Cobras and most of them had this, the Dark Charcoal and Medium Graphite interior that starts on clean door panels that are replete with sweeping ovals and a small, carpeted kick panel. The charcoal of the leather seats surround gray alcantara inserts and all seats, including the rear 2+2 are in great shape, with some noticeable wear and compression on the driver's throne. Our Cobra branded steering wheel leads to SVT's common use of white faced gauges, here arranged with two mains, and four auxiliary to the sides in a symmetrical layout that's easy to read. A basic A/C panel tops the center stack over that standard AM/FM/6 CD player which still has its factory protection film on the screen! An aluminum knob tops the shifter that doglegs up from the floor in Mustang fashion, housed in plastic encasement and wrapped in a leather boot. Black carpet floods the floor cleanly, the foam backed headliner is in nice shape, and the trunk is finished in gray cloth panels presenting flawlessly.
Drivetrain
Under the hood is the impressive 4.6 liter DOHC 32 valve V8 pumping out 320 horsepower and bearing the engraved signatures of the engine builders. It's mated to a Tremec 3650 5-speed manual transmission sending power to the Ford 8.8"" in back with 3.27 gears and TracLoc. Naturally, for a purebred performer like this, four wheel power disc brakes are supplied.
Undercarriage
Driver quality prevails underneath where there is a significant amount of surface rust and oxidation present. We note random black paint or encapsulator throughout the flat parts of the underside. There's no dampness visible and the pans are dry. Dual exhaust hits an H-pipe then on to flow through the original equipment mufflers before terminating at the aftermarket tips mentioned earlier. Independent coil spring suspension is noted front and rear.

Drive-Ability
Hard to believe that 2001 is now old school, and while the interior is dated, (read: classic), by today's standards, it still presents as a comfortable and efficient platform and there's never a dull moment with a stick at hand. The car warms up with a characteristic bellow, and provides good power throughout the test loop. It also handles well and stops on demand. This golden horse checks all the boxes for functionality. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
SVT stood for Special Vehicles Team and just about everything they put their hands on was indeed special. There are many reasons why Ford Mustangs are so popular across the country, and those touched by SVT are one echelon higher than the millions of cars to leave Ford factories. Bang for buck, there may be no greater performance bargain in the world of specialty cars.
