"2001 BMW 740il 4 Door Sedan
""Picture yourself strapped into the most comfortable leather recliner in the world, with a rocket booster in back. That is what it is like to drive my 2001 740il down the interstate. The last of the long wheelbase, classy cars. Best car ever! I wish BMW would not have changed the new 7 series appearance! The new look is by far not as good as this one. The 740 drives like a dream, powerful and agile. It holds the road like a much smaller sportier car."". Just some of the internet reviews from buyers of used 740i's.
For consignment, a 2001 BMW 740il 4 door sedan with a title verified 121,284 actual miles. This is a one owner car, always garaged, and serviced at the dealership and a well known BMW specialty shop in southeastern Pennsylvania.
Exterior
Schwarz 2 is BMW speak for black, a great color for this car that extends to the lower body panels that give the car a sleek look that would be right at home on the Autobahn. Projector headlights differ from the brights creating a visually interesting dual headlight face that flanks the wide kidney grilles over integrated fog lights. Silver trimmed side molding continues around both bumpers adding elegance aided by the stainless trim of the side windows, including the static rear quarter window that helps open up the greenhouse. 16-inch Euroweave wheels car 235/60R16 tires all around, planting this big luxury car squarely on the street. Imperfections include rock chips, side scuffs, and chin spoiler scrapes.
Interior
It's not often you see leather tufting on the doors, but it's here in tan hide which is matched with a brown plastic header, a dark simulated wood grain strip and tightly carpeted inserts on the lower storage bins, all in fine shape. There's some wear and compression on the driver's seat, but it's still a welcoming throne, high, supportive, and soft leather. In contrast, the rear seats are fit for a king with more cushioning, pillowed leather with armrests, headrests, and ample legroom that might have you opting for the rear rather than the driver's seat! Speaking of the driver's seat, the steering wheel is replete with thumb controls that had us reaching for the manual, but the buttons soon became obvious. Ahead, a concise gauge cluster that supports BMW's ad campaign touting driving machines. A wide center stack includes a screen with NAV and an AM/FM radio with CD changer. Below it, an HVAC panel with clear buttons all leading to the center console with the matching shifter in a base of more dark wood. Plush tan carpet is protected by black carpeted mats and the ceiling is full of features, including a sunroof, and a clean headliner frames it all. The enormous trunk is lined with gray carpet and presents cleanly, like the rest of the interior.
Drivetrain
Under the hood of this E38 is the venerable 4.4 liter DOHC V8, fuel injected and rated at 282 horsepower. It's backed by a ZF 5HP24 5-speed automatic transmission sending power to 2.93 gears in back. Power disc brakes are found front and rear. The engine bay is kept clean in part thanks to the large plastic cover. Per our consignor, the A/C compressor and starter are newer.
Undercarriage
Holding up very well for the mileage, the underside has minimal surface rust and no errant fluids to speak of. There's sooty road dust everywhere but no accumulation of grease and grime and it wouldn't take more than a power washer to freshen the undercarriage. Meanwhile, dual exhaust runs down the center tunnel, through original equipment mufflers, then out discreet exhaust tips. MacPherson struts reside at the independent suspension found in the front and back.
Drive-Ability
In a sea of muscle cars, 50's fun, and pre war relics, sitting in this BMW, even as it is 24 years old, feels like the lap of luxury. As the ultimate driving machine, the driver has everything at his or her fingertips and if not for the interaction of driving, one might be lulled to sleep in the comfortable seats. This well maintained car performed as flawless as you can ask for with good power, great handling, responsive brakes, and all functions on board operated just as intended. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
Back in '01, you would have plunked down over 65 large for the 740, which may not sound like much for the brand's halo car, but that's equivalent to $117,000 in today's money! The E38 is a favorite of BMW enthusiasts and cars nice condition like this one generally sell fairly quick. Nearly 25 years after leaving the showroom, this 740 still looks opulent and will impress drivers, occupants, and onlookers alike.
