"2000 Mercedes Benz A190 Avantgarde Sedan
""The 25 year rule has fundamentally transformed the landscape of US car imports, creating a thriving market for classic vehicles while offering substantial savings compared to importing modern cars. In 2025, as tariff structures have become increasingly complex for contemporary vehicles, this decades old exemption has never been more valuable for collectors, dealers, and automotive enthusiasts seeking to import legendary models from around the world."" Wcshipping.com
For consignment, a 2000 Mercedes-Benz A190 Avantgarde Sedan showing 133,759 kilometers, or 83,113 miles, but the true mileage is unknown due to a PA title exemption. You can imagine this compact car tooling around busy European cities and country towns with narrow streets, and it can be used the same way here in the states!
Exterior
Tall, narrow and compact, the profile is definitely European with nothing quite like it in the United States except maybe a Smart ForFour, Mitsubishi Mirage, or BMW I3. Outside of that, it stands alone with Brilliant Silver Metallic paint over an otherwise streamlined bean shaped body with no overhangs and a long, sloping windshield. Both the front fascia and vertical tail retain Mercedes identity in miniature form, right down to the grooved tail lights that adorn every Benz model. 16-inch wheels carry 195/50R16 with a late 2025 date code and rain guards line the side windows, all making for a sporty little profile. Imperfections include a few chips, scuffs on the wheels, some minor inclusions, and some light flex cracking on the chin.
Interior
Simple and efficient, the doors retain some storage in the molded plastic lowers under a soft, gray cloth and all four doors present nicely. Inside, charcoal vinyl frames patterned cloth on both the front bucket seats and the rear bench, with some light patina creasing and some wear on the fronts, with more on the right as that's the driver's seat! This car is not spared Mercedes' wonderful textured rubberized steering wheel, right hand drive, and fronting a clean instrument cluster. Most of the switchgear is reserved for the center stack where a playful curved detail houses a few under the A/C knobs and over a row of toggles and AM/FM radio. The shifter resides in the center console and an armrest is provided to the driver. Charcoal carpet covers the floor and both it and the headliner are clean. There's a small cargo area beyond the rear hatch and also presents cleanly.
Drivetrain
Under the abbreviated hood is a 1.9 liter SOHC inline four cylinder, fuel injected and rated at 125 horsepower. It's mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission that keeps power in front through 3.76 gears. The car has power steering, power brakes and air conditioning and the bay presents cleanly with numerous plastic shrouds and components.
Undercarriage
The underside is clean with plenty of aerodynamic belly pans. Power disc brakes are on all four wheels and a single exhaust travels through original equipment and exits through a chrome, oval tip. The fully independent suspension includes Macpherson struts up front and coil springs in back.
Drive-Ability
Like a Mini Cooper, compact on the outside but perfectly comfortable on the inside. Cozy to be sure but not restrictive and visibility is quite good. The little Benz motors around our test loop with plenty of usable power, straight tracking, and good handling despite the tall roofline. We note the A/C is blowing cool but not cold and the radio is not working. All other functions operate as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
Once you drive this around town, you'll wonder why Mercedes didn't market them in the U.S. They reportedly get about 32 miles per gallon, all while wearing that iconic three point star! Avantgarde, indeed! Be the only one on your block with this cool little compact!
