Exterior
Enveloped in two stage Imperial Red, the exterior of this presents cleanly and includes the optional accessory hardtop in matching red borders around a translucent and smoked roof. The other option is a three window black canvas top in very good condition and no slouch of design if the weather unexpectedly goes bad. Integrated color matched bumpers, flush headlights, a steeply raked windshield, ribbed tail lights, and we have a sports car with fantastic, if not legendary lines that maintain the Benz luxury profile. 16-inch Mercedes wheels carry 225/55ZR16 tires with a late 2022 date code. With the top down, the straight shouldered car takes on an aerodynamic profile and grounded stance. At a distance, she looks flawless. Up close, we note imperfections that include chips, scratches, scuffs, evidence of side mirror contact with something, touched up edge wear, minor blistering at a panel gap, a long linear scratch on a door, and chin scrapes.
Interior
Khaki leather and MB Tex, with plush padding and stitching allow the driver and passenger an almost endless array of recline, height, temperature and stiffness options at the touch of a series of buttons on the door which shows some patina in that area and on the handle. These buckets remain in great shape and the storage area behind them is fully carpeted and clean. The doors are lined with a tasteful mixture of materials including highly lacquered burlwood. This wood can also be seen in the center console housing the AM/FM/Cassette radio with a trunk mounted CD changer and switchgear, cascading down to surround the shifter in the center console. The gauge cluster is simplicity behind glass with all the function indicators a driver will need behind a leather wrapped sport steering wheel. Plush tan carpet covers the floor and fully finishes the trunk.
Drivetrain
The heavily shrouded engine bay is clean and contains the 5.0 liter SOHC V8, fuel injected and putting out 315 horsepower. A 5-speed automatic transmission is behind it and power is routed to the rear axle with 2.65 gears.
Undercarriage
The documented low mileage becomes evident even more on the underside which is fantastically clean and dry. Power disc brakes go to all four wheels and the single exhaust travels through original equipment pipes, muffler and twin tailpipes. Suspension is fully independent and includes Macpherson struts up front and a multilink and coil springs in back.
Drive-Ability
Nothing to report here as this pampered low mileage example does exactly what SL500's are known for; great power, super handling, straight tracking, and a solid, rattle free ride. All functions work as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
Dozens of SL's have come throughout our halls and this is one of cleanest around. The color pops, the interior is comfortable, clean and purposeful, and the three way configuration of the tops never gets dull. This is a fantastic example that still smells like money, nearly 30 years after it left Germany!
