"1994 Dodge Viper RT-10 Roadster
""The Dodge Viper began as a twinkle in the eye of Bob Lutz, who was then Chrysler's president of operations, in 1988. His big ticket idea started with a question: What if the American automobile manufacturer built a sports car in the vein of the original Shelby Cobra Dodge pulls the cover off the production Viper RT/10 at the 1992 Detroit auto show, three years after first showing the concept. The car is as raw as a modern vehicle could be, just as the Shelby Cobra that inspired it was in the 1960s."" Car and Driver, April 2018
For consignment, a 1994 Dodge Viper RT-10 roadster with a title verified 8,047 actual miles. If you've been waiting for an original, pampered first gen Viper for your collection or enjoyment, grab your snake stick and head to Classic Auto Mall before this one slithers away.
Exterior
Four colors were available in '94 but you wouldn't know that by looking at the press materials and coverage for the car, as Viper Red was the most prominent of them all and it envelopes this car with near flawless coverage. In any color, of course, the car is wildly dramatic; incredibly low and wide with gaping coves, the edge of which sweeps back sharply to serve as the base for the side mirrors. Occupants sit deep which means the rear window and buttressed pillars double as a fairing leading to the ever expanding tail and wide set tail lights. Up front, the headlights squint like the browed eyes of a rattlesnake while the integrated grille yawns large to pull air off the road. The 17-inch geometric wheels carry ZR rated tires that are of the right brand and date code to be originals. Imperfections are few and include a small scratch on the apron ahead of the front tire, and some surface level light scratches on the chin.
Interior
The interplay of gray and charcoal on the door panels is tidy, clean, and simple and the seat belts are anchored to each door. Deep gray leather bucket seats have sections of padding and side bolstering aimed at keeping you planted and they flank an enormous center console that doubles as an armrest and shift point. An ergonomic steering wheel fronts a spectacularly clean dashboard with white faced gauges and a center stack with the A/C panel and AM/FM/Cassette radio. To the right, a few scuffs appear on the passenger's side dash and glove box; perhaps someone forgot to hold on? There are some marks on the faceplate around the shifter, while the black, low pile carpet below presents in excellent condition. The modest but functional trunk holds a space saver spare and is lined in clean, black plastic.
Drivetrain
By 1994, the car was already a legend, thanks in part to the 8.0 liter V10 engine dressed in red and pumping out 400 horsepower and in 1994, that was substantial. It's mated to a 6-speed T56 manual transmission that routes power to 3.07 gears in back. The entire front clip pivots forward and reveals a clean and instantly show worthy engine.
Undercarriage
The rear bumper cover extends deep into the underside and somehow has remained free of defects and conditions on the rest of the undercarriage fall line with the low mileage. Power disc brakes, naturally, are on all four wheels, and the dual exhaust becomes iconic side pipes nicely integrated into the red rocker panels. Independent, coil spring suspension is at both ends.
Drive-Ability
Amazingly, no one working at the mall suffers from herpetophobia, but it's the roll of one person to take this dragon-like beast onto the test loop where no flogging will take place, not only because this is a nearly pristine example of a first gen Viper, but because the tires are from 1993 and torque could do bad things. With the exception of the A/C, all functions on this well preserved ride work as intended. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
Yes, the Viper line would evolve, producing the GTS, GT-2, coupes and the 600hp ACR. But here's the original; the car that started it all. If your Viper collection doesn't include a first gen car, it's not complete. Maybe you were in high school when the Viper came out and you haven't slept a wink since. Whatever the case, this is a fantastic example that according to our consignor, has never seen rain, wet roads, or freezing temperatures and has never been raced or run hard. In this case, we believe it!
