"1993 Chevrolet Caprice Classic 4 Door Sedan
""Love it or hate it, you can't deny that the new Caprice Classic makes eyeballs pop. Its shape marks a brave departure from the boxy, staid lines of Chevys previously baked in GM's big car mold. No stale air of same-o, same-o around this predator. No, the air almost crackles within Chevy's tech center. It's electric with debate: will the latest king size Caprice be found largely capricious, unexpectedly capable, or truly classic?"" Car and Driver, Aug. 1990 on the release of the new 1991 Caprice Classic
For consignment, a 1993 Chevrolet Caprice Classic with a title verified 116,080 actual miles, owned by our consignor since 2005 when this puppy had just 58,000 miles and since then, has enjoyed oil changes every 2,500 miles. It's a garage kept, adult owned example of a once common car of which Chevrolet produced nearly 100,000 in 1993.
Exterior
Original paint graces this big car and it's known as Purple Pearl, but it's nothing like Mopar's Plum Crazy, in fact it has more gray tones to it and thus presents much more pedestrian. For a car that had been traditionally square, the '93 is replete with rounded edges, a tall egg shaped cabin, and body colored bumper covers. What remains however is a formidable fascia, a wide grille, flanked here with composite headlights in front of an enormous hood that slopes slightly in front of a raked windshield, likely outperforming its predecessor by bounds in the wind tunnel. Out back, flush oval tail lights also act as the terminus for the large panel of the trunk lid and a fixed rear quarter window extends the greenhouse as silver trim and a pinstripe add more visual interest to the profile. 15-inch wheels carry 215/75R15 tires and side sport mirrors are color keyed to the body. Imperfections include some scuffs, discoloration in the bumper fillers, and some blemishes in the silver molding.
Interior
Burgundy appears in different shades and materials on the door panels where a velour like insert tops the vinyl coated armrest over a dark red carpeted low while faux burlwood trims the switchgear panels, and all four doors are in very good condition. The classic split bench in maroon velour shows only a slight patina on the driver's side but in great shape everywhere else, including the massive back bench. The steering wheel fronts more faux burlwood on an expansive dashboard that houses a wide horizontal speedometer flanked by idiot lights and vertical gauges for gas and water temperature. To the right, a Delco AM/FM/Cassette radio is over a simple A/C panel that is deemed the ""climate control center"". Plush burgundy carpet below is in fine shape and the padded velour headliner above also lacks notable damage or age. Golfing or going on a long trip? The gargantuan trunk will accommodate and do so dressed in gray flannel panels that finish the space cleanly.
Drivetrain
Under the large hood is a driver quality, clean 5.0 liter V8, fuel injected and backed by a 700R4 4-speed automatic transmission sending power to the 10 bolt axle out back. Power brakes do the stopping and slowing job with discs in front and drums in the back.
Undercarriage
For age and mileage, the underside is evidence of a car well cared for and at the very least, garaged. Typical surface rust exits and there's residual oil film on the front pans while some leakage is noted by the rear pinion seal. But no major rust anywhere nor dirt build up. The single exhaust enters a stock style muffler and finally finds its way out at the right rear. Suspension consists of coil springs in front and a 4 link with coil springs in the rear.
Drive-Ability
There's room to stretch out in this Caprice and if you're a child of the 90's, this will bring back some memories for sure! The V8 comes to life without issue and we roll this modern land yacht onto the test loop where it performs well considering it weighs almost 4,000 pounds and is producing less than 200 horsepower. A true cruiser, this car tracks straight and the 75 series tires absorb any kind of road imperfection and turn-in, as expected, is a bit lofty. We note the left rear power window is not working, but all other functions work as intended. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
Though named ""classic"" Chevrolet had no intention of creating a classic car in the mass produced Caprice. But time renders common commuter cars classic when they disappear from the landscape, as the Caprice has. They were used, and used up, as commuter cars are, so finding a survivor in great shape is a bit like a needle in a haystack. This smooth cruiser is ready for a new chapter of life and stands as a running representative of a bygone era, even if the 90's seem like yesterday!
