"1992 Mazda Miata MX-5
""For years, those who loved the road, the wind, the sky, and the stars had cars to satisfy their passions: the classic roadsters. But then those cars disappeared. The car enthusiasts at Mazda asked, ""Why?"" and set out to give the world a modern car that recreated that special feeling and pleasure of classic sports car driving. That car is the Mazda Miata, a car that becomes part of you and responds, not just to your command, but almost to your thoughts. In short, a car with a heart and soul."" From the 1992 Miata Dealer Brochure
For consignment, a 1992 Mazda Miata MX-5 with a title verified 30,095 actual miles. Continually regarded as one of the finest automotive endeavors in history, not only are first gen Miatas classic, but well maintained versions like this one are desirable and the perfect gateway drug into the collector and sports car market. This garage kept example is #564 of 1,519 Sunburst Yellow Miatas produced.
Exterior
Donned in one year only Sunburst Yellow, the car that started a revolution is a bright and cheerful representation showing in stock configuration, just as it was delivered in 1992. There's a consistent use of pill shaped ovals on the car, a conscious design decision, and includes the tail lights which fit flush on the rear corners, the marker lights, the door handles, and the gaping air intake under the nose of the car. The 14-inch wheels are lacking a center cap perhaps in lieu of the locking lugs, and this car also comes with two piece Progressive wheels, long since discontinued. The black canvas top is the perfect complement to the yellow and presents in nice shape. Imperfections include a scratch on the hood, a chip on the decklid, edge chipping, a ding on the driver's door, numerous scratches on the rear bumper, and flex cracking and a pair of dings on the front. There's also some light hail damage throughout.
Interior
Black door panels and the recurrence of oval door handles make up the inner doors with crank windows giving you two less electric motors to worry about! Tall cloth bucket seats present nicely and flank a center console housing the shifter and numbered plate. Up front, ovals about on the steering wheel and the center stack that houses the A/C panel and an AM/FM/CD radio, (the OEM radio comes with). The instrument cluster is fairly simple and standard and the yellow embroidered Miata carpeted mats are apparently coveted in the Miata world and present cleanly here over low pile black carpet. The trunk houses a space saver spare and a tonneau cover is a clean and rust free environment.
Drivetrain
A 1.6 liter DOHC inline four was the only engine offered and is fuel injected and was factory rated at 116 horsepower. It is tied to a 5-speed manual transmission that sends power to the rear wheels and 4.30 gears. The engine bay presents a bit better than driver quality and as expected for a well cared for car with just under 30,000 miles.
Undercarriage
Surface rust and metal oxidation do make an appearance on the otherwise clean and solid underside. A single exhaust system flows to a stainless steel muffler, then exits through a contoured cove in the rear valance while four wheel disc brakes are employed for slowing and stopping. Independent suspension lives front and rear and is composed of coil springs.
Drive-Ability
You can keep telling us it only has 116 horsepower, but there's something about the go kart like feeling of Miatas that just makes them feel quick and maybe a bit more powerful than the 116 horses would dictate. They are nimble, zippy, and as millions can attest now, pretty darn fun. Everything works as it should on this car and the only thing missing is a new loving owner. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
Its small size, nimbleness and surprisingly quick drivetrain is what made the first gen Miatas such a success. Daily this low mileage example or save it for places where car lovers gather, either way, it's a win-win! Everyone has a soft spot for Miatas, no matter what they drive, and here we have a nicely preserved example in a relatively uncommon color.
