"1992 Mazda Miata MX-5
""For years, those who loved the road, the wind, the sky, and the stars had cars to satisfy their passions: the classic roadsters. But then those cars disappeared. The car enthusiasts at Mazda asked, ""Why?"" and set out to give the world a modern car that recreated that special feeling and pleasure of classic sports car driving. That car is the Mazda Miata, a car that becomes part of you and responds, not just to your command, but almost to your thoughts. In short, a car with a heart and soul."" From the 1992 Miata Dealer Brochure For consignment, a 1992 2 owner Mazda Miata with a title verified 29,957 actual miles. Continually regarded as one of the finest automotive endeavors in history, not only are first gen Miatas classic, but well maintained versions like this one are desirable and the perfect gateway drug into the collector and sports car market. This one has some tasteful cosmetic mods that help it stand out from the crowd.
Exterior
Here the Crystal White two stage paint is enhanced with clear lens marker lights and polished metal retro side mirrors, giving the car a more monochromatic profile. There's a consistent use of pill shaped ovals on the car, a conscious design decision, and includes the tail lights which fit flush on the rear corners, the marker lights, the door handles, and the gaping air intake under the nose of the car. 15-inch aftermarket wheels create a sharp contrast in black, rimmed in silver, and wrapped in 55 series tires. The black canvas top shows a touch of wear and some cloudiness to the plastic window, along with some tape over a crack. Fitted mud flaps keep dirt off the clean body on which we could not find any glaring imperfections. There are a few incidences of curb rash on the wheels.
Interior
Black door panels and the recurrence of oval door handles make up the inner doors with crank windows giving you two less electric motors to worry about! Tall cloth bucket seats now rise to meet the chrome roll bars behind them while in front a perhaps a bit more British influence with an added wood rimmed Momo sport steering wheel that frames the standard black instrument cluster topped by a shift light. Chrome rings around the vents also harken to Austin Healey like accoutrements and chrome levers have been added to the A/C panel that is mounted over the AM/FM/Cassette radio and cubby hole storage. In the center console, a wood handled shifter in a stitched black boot and a Nismo shift diagram for even more cross pollination of makes and models. The black loop carpet on the floor is in good shape, and the driver's mat has taken most of the abuse and shows it. The trunk is clean and lined and holds a fire extinguisher and spare tire.
Drivetrain
Under the hood, a clean, driver quality 1.6 liter DOHC inline four cylinder pumping out 116 horsepower and motivated forward by a 5-speed manual. In true sports car style, power is sent to the rear axle where 4.30 gears are found. Power disc brakes are employed at each corner. An aftermarket shock tower brace has been added for extra stability.
Undercarriage
Driver quality underneath with typical surface rust but no oil anywhere, clear knuckles, and all the boots look intact. The single exhaust flows back to encounter a stock style muffler before exiting with a chrome tip at the right rear. Coil spring suspension is found front and rear and both ends are independent.
Drive-Ability
Comfortable seats and a cabin that you become a part of makes for an easy drive around the test loop where the car shifts cleanly, scoots into acceleration, and handles like the proverbial go kart it is! Only the radio and reverse lights don't work on our car, and the airbag light is on because of the steering wheel switch, but all other functions on board operate as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
Its small size, nimbleness and surprisingly quick drivetrain is what made the first gen Miatas such a success, and they only got better from there! Just as there's nothing quite like a vintage British sports car, early Miatas represent Japan's golden egg. Like Easter eggs, future Miatas would be gussied up with bells and whistles, but these early iterations will always be the classic examples. Daily this low mileage example, or save it for places where car lovers gather. Everyone has a soft spot for Miatas, no matter what they drive!
