"1990 Jaguar XJS V12 Convertible
""Jaguar released the XJS coupe in 1976 not as a direct replacement for the E-Type, which retired in 1974, but rather as an evolution of the breed. While the third series XKE wasn't exactly the same sporting car that appeared in 1961, it retained much of the original's character. Whereas the E-Type was curvaceous and sinewy, the XJS used aggressive lines, with its most distinguishable feature being its flying buttresses trailing from the roof to the squared off tail. The model was the first Jaguar not styled by William Lyons and a convertible wasn't available until the model's very end."" thx Hagerty.com
For consignment, a 1990 Jaguar XJS V12 convertible with a title verified 9,612 actual miles. A two owner car in a stunning spec and a sporty soft top for some windblown grand touring. Enzo Ferrari may have said the XKE is the most beautiful car in the world, but we know a few people who think some of Jaguar's best work is encapsulated in the XJS.
Exterior
Ten colors were available for the 1990 XJS and this one shines in Artic Blue mated to a Dark Blue canvas roof which presents a rich contrast. A low shoulder line results in low wrap around bumpers, contouring to the gentle curve in front and arrow straight in back with very nice chrome. The flat deck lid rounds off at the edges and the distinctive tail lights absorb that shape and fit flush, symmetrically positioned over fluted dual exhaust tips. In front, the long, sleek hood descends into a valley flanked by lifting body panels that take in the quad headlights next to a streamlined grille and covered fog lights. 15-inch gray mesh style wheels seem just right for this personal luxury vehicle which has excellent paint and brightwork, along with a top that's in great shape. A single scuff on the radius of a wheel opening is the only imperfection we find on the outside.
Interior
You can look at the door panels and just know they are made with quality materials. They're tight, clean, and efficiently designed here in blue with a burl wood accent. Blue leather bucket seats are providing ribbed inserts and tall backs all in wonderful shape. There are no back seats, only a flat carpeted cargo area. The driver is handed a fairly average black steering wheel which fronts an instrument cluster in a black cove with the tach and speedometer flanking vertical gauges under a row of idiot and indicator lights. The real magic begins in the middle of the dash where highly varnished burl wood veneer takes center stage, surrounding vents, buttons, the glove box, and the center console where the somewhat petite shifter rises gently from the base. An AM/FM/Cassette deck is not far away and a stainless cup holder is on the other side of the shifter, embedded into the armrest. Low pile gray carpet covers the floor and the tan headliner of the canvas roof is in great shape. The trunk is wonderfully configured, covered in carpet, and housing an extra mesh wheel.
Drivetrain
Jaguars infamous butter smooth 5.3 liter V12 occupies the engine bay, and every inch of it! The engine features Bosch Lucas Digital EFI and power is rated at 286 horsepower, more than enough to move this sleek cat through mountain chicanes. GM's TH400 3-speed automatic transmission is mated to the engine sending power to the rear axle where it finds 2.88 gears. Both the front and rear wheels benefit from the presence of power disc brakes.
Undercarriage
Nice and clean underneath with minimal surface rust, clear knuckles, and no apparent leaks. The belly pan is undercoated and the dual exhaust flows through original equipment mufflers before exiting through polished pipes. Independent, coil spring suspension is equipped on the front and rear.
Drive-Ability
Not only a great looking car, but the low cockpit provides a comfortable perch from which operate the Jag, smooth leather and pleasing wood sets the mood and off we go onto our test loop where the car provides a level ride, great handling, and surefooted braking and the engine purrs like buttah! We note the radio is not working and needs a pass code while all other functions on this low mileage example function as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
If you're in the market for an XJS, put this one on your radar or come to the mall for an in person introduction. It's a fine example that could easily be entered in car shows without one iota of embarrassment. In fact, you might even walk away with a trophy. All British shows? Yep! Radwood? Top of the food chain! Your local Cars and Coffee? Why not?! Car fans, regardless of their favorite genre, recognize beauty when they see it, and they will see it when you roll into the lot.
