"1990 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1
The Corvette ZR1 was introduced at the Geneva Auto Show in 1989 and was a joint project of GM and Group Lotus which GM had recently acquired, and the goal was to make the world's fastest production cars. Lotus developed an aluminum block V8 with 4 cams, 32 valves, a unique air management system and along with other ZR1 specific modifications, a supercar was born.
For consignment, a 1990 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 with a title verified 20,427 actual miles. The first year of the C4 ""King of the Hill,"" 3,049 ZR1's were built in 1990 and this is #872, one of only 104 ZR1's to wear Polo Green that year.
Exterior
Deep and dark two stage Polo Green Metallic paint covers the car which from the front, looks like you run of the mill Corvette coupe. But get behind it, and the widened tail section tells a different story. Look closely and you'll find the ZR1 emblem on a rounded back with slightly squared dual tail lights and quad exhaust tips for this American legend. In front, inset marker lights cling to the model for the last year while 17-inch salad shooter wheels hold the staggered size tires that include wide 315/35ZR17 rears. Imperfections here include a straight linear deep scratch in the door, scuffs, inclusions, chips, (especially on hood), edge wear on a door, flex cracks, and chin scrapes.
Interior
With the exception of a few details, it's relatively standard fare on the inside with dramatic black and Saddle brown door panels opening up to deep saddle leather buckets with the Corvette embroidered on protruding pad. We note a touch of wear on the ingress portion of the driver's seat but otherwise both present cleanly. From the steering wheel forward, it's standard Corvette with the arched speedometer and gauges flanking an information screen with digital readout. A larger screen with indicator lights, (they're only idiot lights if you ignore them!), is in the center stack just above the heat/AC control panel and an AM/FM/Cassette player, all backlit in orange. A full power locking switch is just under that, and not found on mere mortal Vettes, allowing drivers to toggle horsepower output from 250 to 375 and can be set depending on who you want driving the car and how you want them driving it. The 6-speed shifter has a leather knob and a clean black leather boot in a console showing some wear, all over tan carpet that covers the narrow footwells and the back cargo area.
Drivetrain
Under the hood is the 5.7 liter DOHC V8, fuel injected and putting out 375 horsepower through a ZF 6-speed manual transmission that finds 3.45 gears in a rear limited slip differential. The clam shell configuration of the hood provides full access to the big motor and its octopus-like intake plenum.
Undercarriage
Driver quality conditions are found underneath where surface rust and some metal oxidation is found. Also here is the dual exhaust traveling through original equipment and power disc brakes on all four wheels. Suspension reigns supreme with a combination of forged aluminum control links, transverse monoleaf springs, stabilizer bars, and independent five link in the rear.
Drive-Ability
It's not every day you get to drive a legend, (actually, it's a few times a week here at Classic Auto Mall!), so we're happy to test out this well loved machine on the loop and see what she does. We're on 25 year old tires, so no skid pad or burnout sessions for us, but a smooth cruise over our asphalt proves that the car tracks straight and handles well with obvious power on tap. We note the reverse lights and horn don't work and in not uncommon fashion, the headlights don't fully rotate up and the driver's headlight does not fully close. Padiddle players, take note. All other functions on this high performance Vette work as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
Here's a low mileage, iconic Corvette that you don't have to be afraid to drive! Slap on a set of new tires and hit the road, Jack! Just don't expect to wow the crowd until you turn your tail around and show them that distinctive wide end and coveted badge!
