"1989 Ford Mustang LX Hatchback
""The 1989 Ford Mustangs remained largely unchanged from the previous couple of years. Ford marked the 25th anniversary of the Ford Mustang with less fanfare than its 20th anniversary, by launching a special edition that applied to all models. The 1989 Mustang entered the market with little new to show enthusiasts. Fortunately, word had gotten around about the new found performance of the 5.0 liter V8 and they were getting snapped up by a still eager public and that helped keep sales over 200,000 for the second year in a row."" For consignment, a 1989 Ford Mustang LX hatchback with a title verified 98,633 actual miles. This one's been restored on the outside, beefed up under the hood, and refreshed on the inside. When wild meets mild, what you end up with is a stout pony car with an enormous fun factor.
Due to modifications of the emissions control devices installed by the manufacturer, please check your local, state, and federal laws to determine if this vehicle is applicable for use on public highways in your area.*
Exterior
The eye grabbing two stage Bright Atlantic Blue Metallic is vibrant and bold and augmented by a 4"" cowl hood, Cobra wing, and 16-inch Chrome Pony wheels. LX were known for their balanced, understated look and these additions maintain a balance, but presents a more muscular profile to include the body hugging straight pipes that are angle cut at the end. A three part tail light is distinctive while the fascia maintains the look Ford established in 1987, a flush series of lights that flank a narrow grille over a lower integrated chin spoiler. This is a tidy package with minimal imperfections. A scratch here, a chip there, and the obligatory chin scrapes.
Interior
Inside, we start with standard door panels handsomely adorned with gray and charcoal vinyl and cloth; simple, clean and efficient. Two tone cloth bucket seats occupy the front and present in great shape, as do the more compact seating in back. If not for the big tachometer, the shift light, and aftermarket AM/FM/CD player, the view from the steering wheel forward could have been lifted from the 1989 sales brochure, once again mixing gray and charcoal in a neat and functional arrangement of gauges and switchgear. Our shifter is the common T-shaped in the center console used in millions of Mustangs over clean gray carpet and Mustang branded mats. The headliner is clean and fully intact and the rear cargo area under the hatch shows a touch of use, but still looks great.
Drivetrain
Polished parts and chrome components dress the bay where we find the consignor-stated FRPP crate engine, a 5.0 liter V8, fuel injected and enhanced with a Cobra intake, new MAF, injectors, and throttle body. It's mated to a rebuilt AOD 4-speed automatic transmission with a 2,000 RPM stall converter. Power is routed to the Ford 8.8"" in back with 4.10 gears and TracLoc.
Undercarriage
Clean underneath with some typical surface rust and film of residual oil on the pans. The dual exhaust system starts with headers, hits an H-pipe sans catalytic converters, then runs in tandem to find a pair of Flowmaster mufflers before exiting through straight, angle cut pipes. Power disc brakes and coil springs are up front while power drums and coil springs with a 4 link out back.
Drive-Ability
This blue pony comes to life and carries us across the test loop without a hiccup, enjoying good power underfoot, straight tracking, and surefooted handling. We note the A/C is not working but all other functions on this LX work as intended. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
Foxbody fans take note! Here's a well sorted Mustang LX with some tasteful modifications and a great looking exterior and interior, not to mention a show worthy engine bay! Brush up on your lasso skills and bring this one home to your stable.
