1988 Mercedes Benz 560SL Roadster
The 560SL was the final version of the R107 series. It made its debut in September 1985, when the model was given a facelift for the 1986 model year. 46,263 were supplied to the United States over their production run from 1985 to 1989 and 11,531 560SL's were built in 1988, most of which were imported to the U.S.
For consignment, a 1988 Mercedes-Benz 560SL roadster showing 126,739 miles, but the true miles are unknown due to faulty odometer. According to our consignor, this car has been garage kept and in recent years, received maintenance to the fuel and ignition systems as well as general maintenance.
Exterior
The unmistakable Mercedes grille and three point star fronts this car giving it a world renowned recognizability as a quality mark. Dual headlights, round for the United States, have flares of amber turn signals that drift back like windblown tufts, while fog lights and rectangular marker lights in front relay this car's sporty side. Bathed in a shade of champagne Mercedes calls Impala Metallic, accents include polished window reveals, body side molding at the level of the wraparound bumpers, and the grooved lower body panel. A double pinstripe complements the waistline and a smart looking brown canvas 3 window top is one of your profile options. The accessory hardtop is included and is painted to match. Out back, grooved lenses of the three color tail lights are also distinct and the straight chrome bumper provides mirror-like reflection. Imperfections include black drip stains, areas of dull blemishes, scratches, scuffs, chips, water or chemical spotting on the hood, a crack in the rear glass, and some rust spots down low.
Interior
There's a lightness to this car in presentation and it's magnified by the choice of beige MB Tex on the interior beginning on the smooth door panels with gently pleated crowns and diminutive hardware. The driver's door shows some light soiling. The stitched and perforated bucket seats show wear while adorned with robust chrome hardware to adjust and move the seats. They flip forward allowing access to a plush carpeted cargo shelf just behind, also showing usage. Looking forward, the steering wheel and dash could use a detail but display VDO gauges and idiot lights, clear, concise and well engineered. The center stack is dressed in dark burlwood veneer and houses the AM/FM/Cassette radio over the A/C controls and it waterfalls onto the center console where the shifter awaits its orders. Here, on the center console, the clear of the wood shows some exposure cloudiness. Plush beige carpet covers the floor and is cut to fit to fully finish the trunk.
Drivetrain
A full engine bay holds the fuel injected 5.6 liter SOHC V8, rated at 227 horsepower and mated to a 4-speed automatic. Power is routed to the rear axle with 2.47 gears. The bay appears clean and in stock configuration and the insulation pad on the hood is tattered and dry.
Undercarriage
Surface rust, oxidation, oil, and some grime characterize this driver quality underside. Here we have power disc brakes on all four wheels, independent coil spring suspension at both ends, and dual exhaust that runs through a stock style muffler, exiting as twin pipes.
Drive-Ability
Well balanced, comfortable, and peppy, the 560's never cease to entertain the driver. Of note in this example, the vacuum locks, radio, A/C, odometer and trip odometer do not work. All other functions operate as intended. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
Admit it, when you see one on the street you still turn your head, not only because of the classic styling but because of the ingrained notion that the SL series represents wealth, freedom, and success. No different with this champagne version and its big V8!
