"Whether you liked George Michael's ""Faith,"" Guns 'n Roses' ""Sweet Child o'Mine"" or Terence Trent D'Arby's ""Wishing Well,"" a fine place to listen 1988's pop and rock music was from the driver's seat of a Ford Mustang GT ragtop. This car comes from a local consignor who stated the mileage at 9720 is understood to be actual. However, we have no documentation other than a clean car fax to back this claim.
Made in Ford's River Rouge Complex in Dearborn, Michigan, this example now wears a two-tone paint scheme of black over red with a black, power-folding vinyl top. The paint and trim are in overall very good order, with a good-looking vinyl top. The engine bay is tidy and the cargo area is clean. The car's body-colored bumpers fit tightly to the body. Aftermarket headlights replace the stock headlights with factory foglights beneath them.
This car rolls on Sumitomo HTR 45Z radials, size 245/45ZR17. Each tire is mounted on a black, five-spoke SR alloy wheel. The car's wheels and tires are in overall very good condition.
Under the hood is a 302 CID high-output 16-valve V-8 engine. The block was fitted with revised, taller lifter bosses to accept roller lifters, and a steel camshaft in 1985 and electronic sequential fuel injection was introduced in 1986. An aftermarket engine air filter has been installed. Driver convenience features include air-conditioning, power rack-and-pinion steering and power, four-wheel disc brakes. Other goodies include cruise control, power windows, power locks, power sideview mirrors and power lumbar function for the front seats. Please note that A/C blows but not cold and fog lights and horn ar einop. Rear windows roll up with assistance.
In August 1986, the Mustang received a facelift for the 1987 model year on both the interior and exterior. The front end was restyled to look more like the SVO which gave the car more of an ""Aero"" look, in keeping with Ford's overall modern styling direction. The interior received an all-new dash, center console and revised seat and door trim. Taillights on the LX were revised with clear lenses for the turn signals while the GT now wore specific body-colored triple-louvered lenses. The quarter glass windows lost their louvers and now sported a single larger flush piece of glass lettered with ""Mustang"" at the bottom rear corners. The GT models featured new round fog lamps and gained aerodynamic lower bodyside skirting as well as new turbine style 15-inch wheels. The 302 CID V-8 became popular with the aftermarket performance industry. The V-6 option was discontinued while the 2.3L four-cylinder gained fuel injection, leaving only the 2.3L four-cylinder and the 302 CID V-8.
V8-powered Mustangs received E7TE heads and forged aluminum pistons with valve reliefs in 1987, as opposed to the flat-tops used in the previous year. Power ratings increased to 225 horsepower and 300 ft?lbs of torque. No major changes were seen for 1988.
Competition to this Mustang convertible in 1988 included Chevrolet's Camaro IROC-Z Convertible, Nissan's 240SX Convertible, Pontiac's Firebird Trans Am Convertible and Toyota's Celica GT-S Convertible.
It is getting harder and harder to find stock or mostly stock versions of these Fox-body Mustangs. If you drove one in high school or college and now that the kids are out of the nest, you'd like another one, you should stop by MotoeXotica Classic Cars today to check out this '88 GT Convertible before it finds a new home within someone else's corral.
