"1987 Ford ASC McLaren Mustang Convertible
""In the 80s, the customers who wanted a little more luxury with their vehicles bought a Mercury Capri, and if you wanted more performance, you would go with the ASC/McLaren. The Capris was contracted to be built by the American Sunroof Company, (ASC), partnered up with the McLaren. Once the Capri production was finally halted, ASC/McLaren offered a version of the Mustang convertible. In its 4 year span only 1,806 Mustangs were converted."" LMR.com
For consignment, a 1987 Ford ASC McLaren Mustang with a title verified 9,259 actual miles. In its first year, just 479 ASC McLaren Mustangs were produced through conversion and this is car #126. In 2025, this car was on display at the Mustang Owners Museum in Concord, North Carolina.
Exterior
To the uninitiated, this might look like a Mustang GT, but to those in the know, the ASC McLaren is instantly recognizable. Not with outlandish wings or boy racer additions, but with subtle exterior enhancements that include a distinctive rear tonneau at the decklid, a special spoiler, and tail light covers that darken the red profile. There are also special side skirts and 15-inch honeycomb mesh wheels branded by ASC McLaren. This car is dressed in Oxford White with a dark blue canvas top and has unique plates on the nose and rear valance stamped with the special branding. Designer Peter Muscat is recognized with an emblem on the sides and careful observers will note the windshield is pulled back 20 degrees from ""regular"" Mustangs, made to emulate the Mercedes SL500 of the era. Imperfections on this clean example include some wear on the canvas top, some haze to the plastic windows, cracking paint where the tonneau seal meets the body, peeling of the side stripe, scuffs, touched up chips, a few bubbles, and some chin scrapes.
Interior
The redesigned blue vinyl and carpeted doors are enhanced with a coveted ASC McLaren call out and both doors are in great shape. Special seats grace the ASC with two shades of blue and embroidered extra padding along with diagonal stitching. We note some minor wear on the driver's entry padding but otherwise both seats show nicely. One of the ASC features includes a rear seat delete, replaced with a package shelf lined with carpet and a soft top stow area that is also carpeted. Standard and simple configuration is found from the steering wheel forward which also relays a two tone palette and a limited edition tag with the car's individual number. A/C knobs are placed above the Ford AM/FM/Cassette radio and the T-handle shifter rises from the center console that is wrapped in leather around the E-brake and ashtray. Blue carpet below is in fine condition and the trunk is loosely finished with carpeted panels.
Drivetrain
Other than the badge on the plenum, we're looking at Ford's venerable 5.0 liter V8 under the hood, putting out 225 horsepower for '87, fuel injected and mated to the AOD 4-speed automatic transmission. Power is routed to the Ford 8.8 inch axle with 3.27 gears and TracLoc. Factory headers are on board to begin the exhaust process. The bay presents cleanly and is ready for show and go!
Undercarriage
Some surface rust and patina are found but otherwise dry and clean conditions are found underneath where the dual exhaust travels through stock style mufflers on its way to an uneventful exit through steel pipes. Power disc brakes are used up front with power drums in back and suspension includes coil springs front and rear with a 4 link in back.
Drive-Ability
We're going to take it easy in this rare car as the tires have a 1991 date code. It delivers GT level performance with obvious power underfoot and a grounded, capable ride. We note the A/C and power locks are not working but all other functions operate as intended on this pampered pony car. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
1987 was a big year for ASC as they were also busy converting Grand Nationals into the 547 Buick GNXs, so you're in good company with this low mileage Mustang and it's a great example of a rarely seen, somewhat obscure model. Maybe you've been pining for a McLaren but don't want to mortgage the house. Here's a nice compromise; Ford partnering with ASC and licensing the McLaren name to produce an unsung unicorn of the Mustang world!
