"1987 Chevrolet Camaro IROC Z28
A concept created partially by Roger Penske, the International Race of Champions or IROC would pit all star drivers from numerous venues of racing against each other in similarly prepared cars. The inaugural year was 1974 and was won by Mark Donohue. While primarily run on oval tracks, it was also run at Riverside's road course, Watkins Glen, and at Daytona Speedway's road course. From 1975 to 1989, Chevrolet Camaros were used as the race car bodies.
For consignment, a 1987 Chevrolet Camaro IROC Z28 with a title verified 94,813 actual miles. Pop in Born in the USA, and turn it up when Darlington County plays, ""We drove 800 miles without seeing a cop; we got rock and roll music blasting off the T-top!"". Yes, this iconic piece of 80's nostalgia is just like the one you had or always wanted.
Exterior
Solid black paint is augmented by a silver stripe that encircles the car just over the cladding that gives the car a performance profile. The iconic IROC-Z strobe decals on the doors remain large and leaning as if pushed by the wind. In front, deep set dual headlights hover over marker light integrated into the fascia and the distinct dual vents, though blending with the paint, are still visible on the hood, a feature not shared with mere mortal Camaros. In back, tail lights made aggressive with the simple use of black trim line up over the rear bumper which advertises the mode of injection. Our 16-inch wheels carry 245/60ZR16 tires and IROC center caps. Imperfections include chips, scratches, inclusions, curb rash, scuffs, and flex cracks.
Interior
Simple black door panels are intact with some light patina and they open to gray cloth bucket seats also showing some age and a large tear on the driver's lower. The rear 2+2 present in good condition and all seats are accented with light gray piping. Our steering wheel fronts a plastic faced instrument cluster that displays five gauges clearly and concisely. The center stack has the A/C levers and Pioneer aftermarket AM/FM/CD radio just before the center console begins, housing the shifter and black switchgear, all in very nice condition with the handbrake handle the only piece showing some age. Gray carpet covers the floor and cargo area, the T-tops are tinted and come with the GM covers for stowage.
Drivetrain
The clean engine bay holds a 5.0 liter V8, fuel injected and capable of 205 horsepower. It's mated to a 700R4 4-speed automatic transmission with power finding the 10 bolt rear axle and a consignor stated 3.73 gears and Positraction. The car's RPO codes shows 2.73 gears.
Undercarriage
Driver quality underneath with a new exhaust system, a single unit that finds a Dynomax muffler in back emitting two tailpipes, each retaining the Dynomax label. Power brakes are divided as front disc and rear drum and coil springs are found at both ends with a torque arm in back.
Drive-Ability
She fires right up and delivers a solid F-body ride that includes straight tracking, good power, and predictable handling. It also has a comfortable sitting position and a simple, analogue interior. The A/C is not working but all other functions work as they should in this little piece of heaven from eighty seven! While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
This was the car to have back in the day and nearly 40,000 owners took one home. The name Z28 is synonymous with coolness and performance and adding IROC brought it up another notch. IROC Heritage events are up and running, harkening back to the glory days of racing that inspired this popular American Camaro.
