1986 Pontiac Fiero GT
In 1984, the Pontiac Fiero, in its debut year, was chosen to pace the Indianapolis 500. Three Indy pace cars Fieros were built for race day duty, each with a 2.7 liter Super Duty 4 cylinder engine producing 232hp. A 2.8 liter V-6 would be available for the 1985 model year, and while it didn't add much more displacement, it brought with it 50 percent more valves and a V6 exhaust note. Most importantly, it came with 140 hp. Thx Hagerty.com
For consignment, a 1986 Pontiac Fiero GT that has been garage kept and with a title verified 107,315 actual miles. For 1986, the Fiero became more aerodynamic with new treatment to the rear and the fastback body style was introduced. As the '86 models were being introduced in Fall of 1985, the GT was not ready and didn't appear until January of 1986 which is why it is sometimes referred to as the 86 model.
NOTE: This vehicle is sold with a state issued VIN and a clean and clear title
Exterior
Wearing a similar paint scheme to the 1984 pace car, white dominates the body, underscored by a gray rocker panel that continues to encircle the car running parallel to the side black body molding that runs nose to tail. Inset marker lights front an aerodynamic nose where pop up headlights maintain constant airstream flowing back to a steeply raked windshield, then sailing over the rear window which is framed in fastback style rear windows that create transparent flying buttresses around the vertical rear window. Further out back, Pontiac continues its tradition of smoke tail lights and expansive light bars by illuminating the make name in the center section, and if you were a kid in the 80's, this was pretty cool. Quad tail pipes also pump up the raciness of the sports wedge and a rear wing absolutely kicks it up a notch. 15-inch lace style wheels carry slightly staggered size tires and house some delamination on the wheels. We also note some roughness in areas of the paint along with a few stone chips and minor scratches.
Interior
The door panels begin with gray plastic uppers over carpeted kick panels that accommodate storage pockets adorned with the Fiero logo which is a bird's eye view of a Pegasus. There is some discoloration on the driver's handle from years of shutting the door and some general patina. A bit of patina is also seen in the cloth bucket seats which are in overall good condition and provide sporty side support and these also wear the logo along with some gray piping. A leather wrapped sport steering wheel presents to the driver in front of the instrument cluster that is quintessentially 80's, with a brushed nickel faceplate over gauges and a series of idiot lights arranged like some kind of early computer schematic. The center stack contains a few square gauges over the A/C panel and AM/FM/Cassette radio with Pontiac's gray plastic switchgear that would remain in vogue for another 10 years or so. The flat and square center console houses the shifter, a stout T-shaped affair with a leatherette boot that's a bit bunched up in this case, followed by some weathered window switches and side mirror controller. The gray loop carpet shows some age but is intact and the gray, foam backed headliner around the sunroof is holding up well, as is the small storage trunk behind the mid mounted engine.
Drivetrain
Behind the rear glass is the hatch to the engine and within is a 2.8 liter V6 that is fuel injected and rated at 140 horsepower. It makes quite a statement with its red plenum and valve covers in a clean engine bay! This one is backed by a TH125 3-speed automatic transmission sending power to the rear axle and 3.06 gears. Power disc brakes are supplied to all four wheels.
Undercarriage
Plenty of surface rust and patina on this well loved car and some residual oil about the engine bottom along with some grime build up in spots, but the knuckles are clear. The single exhaust finds its way to a stock style muffler that sends out two tail pipes that turn into four exhaust tips with chrome covers. Front and rear suspension is independent.
Drive-Ability
This budget sports car doesn't fail to provide a comfortable cabin with a true sports car seating position and good visibility with the glass panels and full width rear window. It's not blistering fast, but the low center of gravity convinces you you're moving faster than you might be and the short wheelbase makes for spirited turns and great maneuverability. And bonus, all functional items in and around the car operate as they should, including the pop up hidden headlights! While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
Ferrari has the prancing horse, Porsche features a stallion on their crest, Mustang's horse is running across the grille, but the Fiero logo has a horse with wings and depicted from above is a clear nod to the screaming eagle of the Trans Am. Truth be told, Pegasus was one of the working names used by Pontiac before they decided on Fiero, which means very proud. And you'll be proud to own this well maintained example of the increasingly desirable Fiero GT!
