"1985 Pontiac Fiero GT Coupe
""Just one year ago, Pontiac stunned the automotive world with one of the most innovative new cars in years - the mid engine Pontiac Fiero. And from day one, Fiero was a sensation with car enthusiasts and car critics alike. Now, Pontiac does it again. Introducing the exciting new Fiero GT. Its slippery aero nose, special ground effect side skirts and available aerodynamic rear wing spoiler are all derived from the fabulous 1984 Indianapolis 500 'Indy Fiero' pace car."" From the 1985 sales brochure.
For consignment, a 1985 Pontiac Fiero GT coupe with a title verified 51,580 actual miles. This garage kept example presents in clean and original condition and is likely to only gain in collectability.
Exterior
Our little wedge features some aspects of 80's Pontiacs that were seen across the line, including the two tone paint here putting Black over a band of gray, body cladding that essentially lowered the profile, wheels with a geometric design instead of spokes from a central hub, and a tail light bar in back stylistically darkened by a black grid. The rear also features flying buttresses around a vertical window, an aerodynamic wing, and quad exhaust tips contoured into the valance. The aero nose features the Fiero GT badge and a bird's eye view of a Pegasus, the original working name for the Fiero. This car gets its ducts in a row with quarter panel intakes and decklid heat extractors. Imperfections include a dullness and some touched up chips on the side mirror, various small chips and scratches, thin paint on the rear bumper cover, rear Fiero decal peeling, flex cracking on back fender, and some light chin scrapes.
Interior
Charcoal gray cloth inserts under gray plastic door cards dress the inner doors, and other than some soiling on the driver's handle, both present cleanly and have a black plastic switch panel. Cloth bucket seats are also two tone and fully intact with speakers built into the headrest and sporty side bolstering. A thick steering wheel fronts a spotless instrument cluster behind a brushed aluminum trim plate, all behind a tilt steering wheel. The center stack is also simple and stock, with gray buttons adorning the A/C control panel and AM/FM/Cassette radio with built in EQ, leading to an equally clean center console housing the T-handle shifter, gray window toggles, and cigarette lighter. The gray weave carpet is also in great shape, protected by matching mats and the headliner of this slick top is also in nice condition, showing some typical dimples and slight looseness on the visor fabric. The front trunk is reserved for a spare tire, brake booster, and A/C accumulator.
Drivetrain
A bright red plenum highlights the 2.8 liter V6 under the rear hatch, putting out 140 horsepower, fuel injected, and mated to a TH125 3-speed automatic transmission keeping power in back and routing it through 3.33 gears. A/C and power brakes are supplied and the bay presents cleanly.
Undercarriage
Super clean underneath where the dual exhaust runs through a stock style muffler that emits two tail pipes and four chrome tips. Power disc brakes are at all four wheels and the fully independent suspension consists of coil springs up front and Lotus inspired Chapman struts in back.
Drive-Ability
Feeling more like a Corvette than Firebird, the compact interior is nicely ergonomic and sporty and the sitting position is more sports car than F-body. The car starts, idles and runs just fine through our test loop and handling of course, is very good. You might not win any drag races but that's not really the point of this car. It's fun at any speed and all functions operate as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
It was an exciting time at Pontiac, (their tag line, ""we build excitement"" proves that), and Indianapolis picked the Fiero GT to pace the race in '85. Now, Fieros may be on a slight uptick in collectability and seeing them exclusively at car shows is becoming a common occurrence. This is a very nice example that according to our consignor, was never driven in rain or snow.
