1984 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham D'Elegance
The Fleetwood Body Company of Fleetwood, Pennsylvania was founded by Harry Urich in the nineteenth century. It began as a small community of craftsmen founded by Henry Fleetwood, Esq. of Penwortham, near Lancaster, England, (the Fleetwood family flourished in England in the 17th and 18th centuries). The rich traditions of 300 years of coach-building that the Fleetwood Body Company applied to its work on cars secured for it a high reputation in automobile circles worldwide by the 1920s. Coachwork was built by Fleetwood for a variety of luxury brands through 1924. GM, having bought both companies named the Cadillac Fleetwood in honor of this early coach building company from Pennsylvania, and the town bearing its name...Fleetwood.
For consignment, an original survivor, with nice Autumn Maple paint, and a very clean and fullyconvenience laden working interior. A smooth 4100HT 4.1 liter V8 is under the hood, it looks just like the day your pop pop drove it off the showroom floor in square and rectangle, large and in charge form.
Exterior
Straight steel which lines up very nicely with its chromed trimmings is bathed in Autumn Maple, (maroon) ,which has a bit invasive rusted on its lowers. Particularly the lower door frames and rockers show some invasive rust. From the square and rectangle design grille and dual rectangular headlights all shiny and nice to the rear coach lamp shaped vertical tail lamps with chrome frames, this car shows as original with a respray. Lest we forget a smooth padded to the hilt vinyl top which adds to the delicious richness this car offers up in mid 80's style. The top is a bit dirty and shows soiling, but is framed with shiny drip edges and window surrounds . Even the Cadillac script engraved into the side mirrors is near showroom! Factory tinted glass all around adds privacy for those well heeled passengers.
Interior
A swing of the massive dark red velour padded panels on the highly convenience optioned doors are also showing with some leather armrests, and wood appliqu with chromed trimmings is a preview of things to come. A full control panel-esque grouping of toggles and joysticks work all the convenience functions and are at your fingertips. These include power windows, power seat controls, power lock toggles and a mirror joystick chromed to the max. So is the clean door actuator handle and a large bright square courtesy light so you don't scrape your Bruno Maglis on the threshold. Lower bands of maroon carpeting aid in this protection as well. Panning to the inside there are two tufted buckets which have buttons a-plenty inside the tufted velour. There are padded center armrests which fold upward and disappear from the bucket seats making room for a third passenger. Having the driver open the rear doors, you can luxuriate in a large padded bench, again with the tufting and buttoning, and central fold up armrest. These wonderful overstuffed recliners float in a sea of deep red/maroon thick pile carpet that has no stains or scuffs on it. Looking forward to the dash we note plenty of wood appliqu mixed with some dark red vinyl housing all the essentials and is fronted by the original steering wheel which also has a strip of veneer inlay with a red circle rim. In a centrally located red molded vinyl bump out from the dash are a digital AM/FM/Cassette player, digital electronic climate controls, and a fuel data gauger which is also digital. Across the red padded dash top is a small data strip which includes the fuel gauge.
Drivetrain
Under the massive hood, in a clean slightly patina'd engine bay sits the 4100HT 4.1 Liter V8. This is original to the car and you can tell as you hear it idle, it has been masterfully and faithfully attended to with servicing. It is fuel injected and has a 200R4 4-speed automatic transmission pushing power rearward to a 10 bolt 3.42 rear axle.
Undercarriage
Slight surface rust on the usual suspects, but the floorpans don't even have barely any road dirt on them. All solid underneath and power disc brakes for the front, and power drums for the rear. A stock exhaust is on snaking its way from front to rear and in independent coil spring front suspension is noted along with a 4 link and coil spring arrangement in the rear.
Drive-Ability
We love these large and in charge Detroit iron behemoths that roll through our door, and this one has no love lost for it. It started right up, was extremely comfortable, and my snappily dressed for the occasion test driver whisked me through the test track and I did not spill a drop of my chardonnay. A few frowns crept up during my chauffeured drive, those being the wipers not wiping, the power locks not locking and the driver's power seat front tilt selector not moving the seat. An excellent experience, and what a great job I have indeed, I could get accustomed to all this hobnobbing with the goober smoocher set.
Well heeled, high class, wealthy, high end, and luxurious still abound in this classic, which rolls you down the road with showroom ease and style, as well as mostly solid, (save for the rockers and door lowers). Fastidiously maintained and put away nicely for the next jaunt, this Caddy is truly rad, with a big touch of class!
