1984 Bentley Mulsanne Saloon
Between 1980 and 1987, just 482 base Mulsanne were produced by Bentley. In 1984, only 13 left hand drive examples were produced along with 20 right hand drives for a total production of 33 hand built cars. Up until the release of the Mulsanne, Bentley models were differentiated by their single letter names, so the Mulsanne broke the mold and was followed by a series of model names in the Bentley line.
For consignment, a 1984 Bentley Mulsanne saloon with a title verified 99,871 actual miles. Far from Concours level perfection, here's one you can drive with not so reckless abandon, impress your friends and neighbors, and experience an automobile very few have the advantage of driving.
Exterior
It's not toaster shaped, it's oven shaped! The proportions are large and in charge and cannot be confused with anything in the world, other than a Rolls Royce. True to its origins, this one is covered in British Racing Green paint and is fronted not only by flush, composite headlights, but the second most famous grille in the automotive world. Its stately profile is boxy and tall and the doors take up a good bit of real estate balanced by the hood and sizable decklid. Out back, the broad tail lights wrap around over a chrome bumper and dual exhaust tips, while a period pigtail phone antennae remains in place. Imperfections include sizable paint chips and cracks, bubbling, and some scuffs and scratches.
Interior
This is where Bentleys and Rolls Royce's truly excel and it becomes immediately obvious when you open the door at which time you're greeted with robust panel made of quality materials and of course, saddle colored leather being the primary one, which is contrasted by chrome faceplates for hardware and wooden sills, here showing a peeling of the veneer on all of the doors. Once inside, it's large leather bucket seats that await your derriere and in this case, both front seats show a lot of love marks and by marks we mean sizable tears and cracking. The rear seats show use as well though not to the same extent. Back up front, a simple black steering wheel fronts a wood faced dashboard, elegant, but also subject to some cracking of the laminate, especially around the gauges and the leather mid panel shows some patina as well. There's an AM/FM/CD radio under the electronic climate controls screen along with vents in the center stack. Brown carpet is protected by Bentley branded mats and the headliner is a stylish combination of materials and textures. The sizable trunk is fully finished in carpet and is replete with amplifiers and other wall mounted accessories.
Drivetrain
Driver quality conditions are noted in the bay which houses a 6.75 liter V8, rated at 205 horsepower and fuel injected. It's mated to a TH400 3-speed automatic transmission that routes power to the rear axle and 3.08 gears.
Undercarriage
Driver quality underneath as well with some road soot and a film of residual oil, but otherwise straight and intact. Power disc brakes are employed at all four wheels and dual exhaust is fitted with stock style mufflers and resonators as it makes its way to the back, exiting through two chrome tips. Independent coil spring suspension is at both the front and the back.
Drive-aAbility
Torn seat or not, we're not passing up an opportunity to pilot this opulent chariot around the test loop where it delivers a quiet, smooth ride fit for a king. If there's ever been a magic carpet ride with wheels, the Bentley is it and even with some mileage, still gives the gift of floating. All of the dash components operate as they should but we note the high beams don't stay on as they default to low beams, the driver's power seat is not working, and the passenger seat has only the rear tilt function working. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
Like pizza, even when it's mediocre, it's still pretty darn good. That's the case here with this well loved Bentley that shows patina but retains its impressive curb appeal. It's a lot of car with a lot of presence and of course, an historical brand known for its royal accoutrements. If you're ready to roll like Monarchy, this Brit is for you!
