"1983 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 Coupe
""When the all new third generation Camaro came out at the dawn of 1982, the Z28 was the slickest piece of work on the road: nose down, tail up, striped and bespoilered like a muscle machine built a dozen years previous might've been. The Firebird's aero-slick shape, monochrome and black paint scheme and relative lack of adornment lent it a quasi Euro GT vibe, but the showy new Camaro was the very vision of a low slung all American muscle machine for the Eighties, with dished five spoke wheels and white letter tires, a scooped hood and colored striping that separated the body color from the ground effects."" Hemmings.com
For consignment, a 1983 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 with a title verified 98,426 actual miles. More than 150,000 Camaros were built in 1983 and 25,044 of them left the factory in black, the most popular color, seconded by white and red respectively.
Exterior
More Camaros would be produced in 1984, but black would remain the favorite color. This Z features the distinctive gold band rocker panel topped by two tone gold and tan striping that encircles the car and enhances the appearance of a lean and low stance. Deep set quad headlights front a hood that features a unique and now recognizable ornamental hood scoop stamped in and painted flat black. In back, black bisected three color tail lights are tucked under a streamlined wing and over the black bumper cover while 15-inch 5 spoke color matched wheels set you apart from base Camaros. What all Camaros share is the F-body's long hood and sloping, curving rear glass, here fully tinted. From the outside, this is a fantastic example, a virtual time capsule. Imperfections include a few chips in the paint, general inclusions, chips on the rear bumper where a badge would be, and some scuffs on the side molding. Not bad!
Interior
Pleated cloth over carpet being out Camel palette on the door panels and they are both simple and clean. Inside, the bucket seats borrow that cloth design and present in very nice condition, mirrored on the 2+2's in back. Our pre airbag steering wheel has three wide spokes and a black wrapped rim, fronting a simple instrument cluster behind a black textured faceplate while an AM/FM/CD radio and A/C panel occupy the center stack. Our center console is spectacularly clean and so is the shifter and it resides over clean beige carpet below. Up top, the overhead console is fantastically vintage with trip tickers and Ray-Ban holder and along with the headliner, remains very nice. Tan carpet floods the floor and cargo area which has sides finished with plastic panels.
Drivetrain
More impressively clean surfaces are found in the engine bay which houses the 305ci LG4 V8, putting out 150 horsepower, five more than the previous year's Z28. It's fueled by a 4-barrel carburetor and mated to the desirable T5 5-speed manual transmission that routes power to the 10 bolt rear axle and 3.73 gears.
Undercarriage
Other than some oil film on the pan and rear differential, this well preserved Z28 features a clean and dry underside with some typical surface rust and a solid structure. A single exhaust enters a Dynomax muffler in the back which emits two tailpipes. Up front, we have power disc brakes and coil springs while in back we have power drums, coil springs and a torque arm.
Drive-Ability
The skies have cleared and the test loop is dry for our run in this time capsule of an '83 Camaro which starts quick, handles great, and is functionally up to par. The seats are comfortable and the shifter operation is satisfying and plenty of glass provides great visibility. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
It's not the quickest Z28 ever produced, but it was the genesis of things to come and is an example in rare, mostly original condition. Many lights have been replaced with LED's, an improvement over 1983 technology. If you had one in high school and daily drove it, here's a unique opportunity to relive those glory days. If you have a Camaro collection, this may be one of the nicer '83's you'll find to fit that gap.
