"1981 Jeep CJ5
""If popularity hasn't quite bred contempt for the Jeep CJ-5, it has seen this big selling off roader being unfairly overlooked in the gold rush for classic 4x4s. Where early Land Rovers, Range Rovers, Toyota Land Cruisers, and various other Jeep models have all attracted big interest and commensurate values, the CJ-5 has reassuringly just gotten on with things, as it has since it launched in 1954."" Hagerty.com
For consignment, a 1981 Jeep CJ5 showing 83,107 miles, but the true miles are unknown due to a title exemption. One reviewer online wrote, ""It's the most fun Jeep I've had. Can't wait for summer to hit here in Georgia, so I can drive without the soft top. It's fun with just the doors off, but no roof or doors will be a blast."" No matter what state you're reading this from, the same fun could be had!
Due to modifications of the emissions control devices installed by the manufacturer, please check your local, state, and federal laws to determine if this vehicle is applicable for use on public highways in your area.*
Exterior
Can we talk about the stance first because this one really makes an impression on 15-inch Mickey Thompson wheels and 35-inch tires with leaf springs that send this thing sky high. The second thing you'll notice is the two stage Sapphire Blue paint which is vibrant and a great background color for the chrome front bumper, chrome roll cage, and black components that include the door and bikini top, the rear tubular bumper, and of course, all that rubber of the tires including the rear mounted spare. Up front, a SmittyBilt winch is ready to get you out of a bind, or help your neighbor get their car out of a snowbank. Imperfections include some wear and aging on the canvas doors, chips in the paint, areas of orange peel, bubbling, scratches, underspray, paint runs, scuffs, touch ups, and rock chips in the windshield.
Interior
Corbeau racing seats occupy the front complete with harness style seat belts while the typical rear bench is mounted behind. A three spoke sport steering wheel leads to a body colored dash and with gauges and knobs joined by an AM/FM radio, twin gauge pod, and CB radio mounted to the bottom edge of the dash. The shifter and range selector emerge from the floor which is devoid of any covering and ready to take on the debris of wild adventures.
Drivetrain
Under the hood is a 304ci V8 with a 2-barrel carburetor, headers, and a T176 4-speed manual transmission tied to a Dana 300 transfer case. Power is routed to the AMC 20 rear axle and a Dana 30 up front. The Jeep is equipped with power steering and power brakes.
Undercarriage
Dual exhaust runs through MagnaFlow mufflers on this driver quality underside and there are no catalytic converters present. Power brakes are distributed as front disc and rear drum and over the axle leaf springs are found at both ends. Tubular step bars are also mounted underneath.
Drive-Ability
We've said it before, the fun factor of an open air Jeep is off the charts and we step up to this one for a short taste of that adventure. The V8 provides plenty of power for this generally lightweight 4x4 and knobby tires sing their usual song on the blacktop. We note the horn, heater blower, left turn signal, reverse lights and clock are not working. Everything else on the list worked as it should and it's time to take this outdoor adventurer inside for a while. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
Rise above the crowd on the street and traverse the deepest ruts in the mountains or desert with this capable and attractive version of one of Jeep's finest. It's the ultimate summer cruiser and is equally at home on Main Street as it is on the Maine coast, or anywhere else there's some rugged terrain.
