1980 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe
The third generation of Corvettes, known as the C3's, ran from 1968 to 1982. Famed designer Larry Shinoda is credited with penning the design inspired by his 1965 Mako Shark II concept car. The C3 would go through several body modifications over the years and in 1980, the cars had a wider appearance with the integration of front spoilers into the bumper cover and a redesigned hood.
For consignment, a 1980 Chevrolet Corvette coupe with a title verified 45,077 actual miles. This car has been family owned since 2000, repainted in 2001, and representing the fantastic C3 design in original configuration.
Exterior
Two stage Silver Metallic covers the fiberglass panels of this classic American sports car and makes an immediate impression on onlookers. This first year of the exterior redesign gives the C3 an aerodynamic stance that makes it look lower and wider than previous iterations. Fenders rise above the hood which now includes a sculpted aero bulge and the tail is sculpted into the bodywork and leans over the rear fascia with quad tail lights. Like a jet's fuselage, the glass T-tops allow in light like a canopy and are easily removed for open air driving without compromising structural rigidity. Functional side vents contrast the silver paint and YJ8 Corvette wheels present in great condition. Imperfections include some scratches/cracks, small inclusions, flex cracking on the nose, small chips, clear coat run, and some rough surface at wheel opening. Overall, the paint and body are excellent.
Interior
Black starts on the vinyl panels of the long doors with carpeted lowers and other than some wear on the plastic trim plates of the driver's door, both present beautifully. The two piece leather sport seats are distinctively Corvette and the driver's side a bit of wear but otherwise both are in great shape. A leather wrapped steering wheel on a tilt column leads to a simple black plastic gauge cluster with speed and RPM on display flanking indicator lights. The center stack is more jet-like with numerous gauges and a clock just above an AM/FM/Cassette radio and climate controls, all in nice shape. A black knob shifter is in the center console along with electric window switches, housed in a hard, flat plastic surround and a black leather boot. Black carpet is strewn throughout and remains in good condition, including in the rear cargo area.
Drivetrain
Under the hood is the 350ci L48 V8, putting out 190 horsepower and fueled by a 4-barrel carburetor. It's mated to a TH350 3-speed automatic transmission that routes power to 3.07 gears in the rear limited slip axle. The bay presents as clean and original and the car is equipped with power brakes, power steering, and air conditioning.
Undercarriage
This is a driven, but clean underside, testament to the car's low mileage. Dual exhaust flowed through stock style mufflers and soon terminated in back and we note the lack of a catalytic converter. Power disc brakes are at both ends and suspension includes coil springs up front and half shafts, lateral struts, control arms and a transverse leaf spring in back.
Drive-ability
This well preserved '80 does everything well on the test loop and while not the most powerful Vette we drive, its low center of gravity and handling makes it feel fast and fun and frankly, addictive! The cabin is absolutely race inspired and you can live out your Walty Mitty track fantasies in this one. We note the power locks are not working but all other functions operate as intended. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
More than a dozen 1980 Corvettes have passed throughout our Hallowed Halls, finding new owners along the way and we think their collectability and desirability is moving in an upward trajectory. The design is timeless and will look good 50 years from now. But you'll have to buy this and put it in the garage to test our theory!
