The 1978 Datsun 280Z marks the absolute final year of the iconic first-generation 'S30' chassis layout, concluding a legendary run that started with the 1970 240Z. Known for its distinct balance of performance, affordability, and timeless styling, the 1978 model is highly celebrated as the most refined and powerful iteration of the original classic Z cars before Datsun shifted production to the heavier, grand-touring 280ZX in 1979. To combat stricter US emissions regulations while keeping performance lively, Datsun enlarged the straight-six engine to 2.8 liters and swapped out the problematic carburetors of earlier models for advanced electronic fuel injection. - Engine Type: 2.8-liter (2,753 cc) L28E Inline-6, iron block with an aluminum head. - Fuel System: Bosch L-Jetronic electronic fuel injection. - Power Output: 149 horsepower @ 5,600 RPM and 163 lb-ft of torque @ 4,400 RPM. - Transmission Choices: 4-speed manual (standard), 5-speed manual (optional), or 3-speed automatic. - Performance Figures: 0--60 mph in roughly 8.5 to 9.3 seconds, with a top speed of 121 mph. The 1978 model featured the large, federally mandated 5-mph impact bumpers, which added some weight relative to the early 240Z but came with a more rigid structure and improved cabin luxury. It was primarily sold as a two-seat coupe, though a longer 2+2 four-seater configuration was also available. - The 'Black Pearl' Edition: 1978 is famous for the introduction of this single-year special edition. It marked the first time a Z-car was offered in black factory paint, packaged with unique red and silver dual-stripe decals, dual racing mirrors, and unique louvers. Only about 1,500 units were produced, making it a highly sought-after collector item today. This rare one owner car was the first car the original owner ever bought himself. It was garaged in 1997 until it was sold to Duncan Imports. The car has a new clutch and the drivers door had some paint work done.
