"1977 Yamaha XS650D Motorcycle
""Similarities to British twins exist more with regards to the vertical twin architecture, and perhaps market segment targeting than actual engineering practice. The all aluminum unit construction 5-speed overhead camshaft horizontally split engine exudes Japanese precision. It enjoys a reputation for reliability that can only be gleaned from decades of refinement during a long production run. To me, the 1977 D model represents one of the best years. To many this is the quintessential 'better than a British vertical twin' vertical twin."" RetroTours.com
For consignment, a 1977 Yamaha XS650D motorcycle with a title verified 9,582 actual miles, but has not been run in a while as it was part of a private collection. In mid 77, the forks had a redesign with new internals and an increase in diameter from 34mm to 35mm.
Exterior
This mid sized bike features a base of maroon paint accented by gold and black on the gas tank and the side cover where the 650 is expressed. Prominent chrome features include the upper fork, fenders, rear shocks, exhaust and all light housing. Our saddle is black vinyl in flat configuration and stitch patterned design and center strap. The engine, frame, and accessories all present in excellent condition. The tubular frame is black.
Functionality
A central ignition port is flanked by a speedometer and tachometer, topped with indicator lights including turn signals. Brake handles are gold anodized and the standard controls are on each side. Rubber coated foot pegs are on board for driver and passenger.
Drivetrain
The bike is equipped with a 653cc vertical twin producing 53 horsepower and fueled by dual 1-barrel Mikuni BS38 carburetors tied to the 5-speed manual chain drive transmission. Disc brakes are on the 19-inch front wheels and drums are found on the 18-inch rear. The Yamaha has dual exhaust and for suspension, a telescopic fork in front and dual shocks on the back.
""The first Yamaha 4 stroke machine was a 650 and it became a market leader in its class. Today refined and improved, the XS650 is a unique class machine proving that the traditionalist still wants 50hp six-fifties for everyday use. The XS650 is powered by a 653cc parallel twin engine with valves operated by a single chain driven overhead camshaft. It is smart, functional and powerful with a surprising turn of performance."" From a 1977 print ad for the XS650.
