"1977 Mercedes Benz 450SL Roadster
""The success story that Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher set in motion starting in 1967 began for the SL with the R 107 series. Aimed more at the U.S. market than its predecessor – thus emphasizing luxury, comfort and safety – for Heck it nevertheless provided a good basis for a ""real AMG"". It's hard to argue against the triumph of the R 107, which saw touring success in its incarnation as the Mercedes-Benz 450 SLC AMG ""Mampe"". Above all, the R 107 was built continuously for almost 18 years from 1971. With around 250,000 units, it remains the best selling model series."" Mercedes-amg.com
For consignment, a 1977 Mercedes-Benz 450SL with a title verified 95,830 actual miles. We've seen our share of SL's here at Classic Auto Mall and can attest to this car's clean exterior presentation.
Exterior
Astral Silver Metallic paint adorns the classic lines of the SL which is configured more like a sports car, contrasting the Mercedes line of upright sedans at the time and hitting its stride in '77 with those seeking a ""personal luxury sports car"". We're seeing near flawless coverage of the paint which extends onto the distinguishing grooved side skirts, the flat decklid, and the gently sculpted hood that is flanked by flat fender tops and carry with it the 3 point star and grille when lifted. A blue canvas soft top is the perfect complement, but you also can't ignore the silver accessory hardtop which, with the help of a friend, creates a solid roof car out of a roadster. 15-inch Mercedes wheels are nicely designed and are wrapped evenly by 205/65R15 tires. Imperfections include some curb rash on those wheels, a few light scratches including on the rear bumper, scuffs where the hardtop makes contact with the body, and some paint runs in the grooves.
Interior
Blue MB Tex is nicely presented on the door panels with both smooth surfaces and textured inserts along with Benz's typical efficient and well made hardware. Both MB Tex bucket seats show wear with the driver's fading and cracking a bit more significant. One of the better steering wheels in the industry is like firm, textured rubber that assures a good grip and fronts a clean and easy to read instrument cluster with no wasted space. A post '77 AM/FM radio has been added in the center stack that contains original A/C controls, and leading to a clean black faceplate for the shifter and its notched track. Blue carpet covers the floor and the rear cargo area where we find external speakers, and the trunk is finished in gray cloth panels.
Drivetrain
Under the hood, is the 4.5 liter SOHC V8 with 180 horsepower and electronic fuel injection. It's mated to a 3-speed automatic transmission sending power to 3.07 gears at the rear axle.
Undercarriage
Uniformly black, the underside presents in driver quality conditions with dual exhaust finding a stock style muffler then exit as twin tailpipes. Power disc brakes are at all four wheels and suspension is composed of coil springs front and rear.
Drive-Ability
The perfect height, good balance, a sporty yet luxurious interior; this car checks all the boxes which is why people love them. Oh, and it has respectable power to boot! As we make our way around the test loop, we find all functions working just as intended, a testament to fine engineering and proper stewardship. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
Here's a stunning, now vintage car that seems to have the timeless appeal and the coveted three pointed star and if you were rocking this 1977, you were a big deal. Well, you'll still impress with this brilliantly designed car and this one is sure to turn heads.
