"1975 Mercury Cougar XR-7 Hardtop
""For 1975, Cougar invites you to enter the world of sleek elegance and bold glamour. Among midsize personal luxury cars, this one is just as unique in its own class as the Continental Mark IV. From its advanced suspension system tuned to steel belted radials, and the steely pride of its classic grille to the sophisticated opera window and distinctive landau roof, XR-7 rises to the eminence that is bound to be envied."" Excerpted from the sales brochure.
For consignment, a 1975 Mercury Cougar XR-7 showing 51,028 miles, but the true miles are unknown due to a title exemption. Nearly 63,000 Mercury Cougars were produced in 1975 and they were all XR-7's, and they were meant to be driven. As such, this surviving example is the first '75 we've had the honor to represent.
Exterior
It appears exactly as the sale brochure proclaims; a midsize, for the 70's, personal luxury cars. Two long doors, a long hood, and proportionately shorter tail section. And that's where we find some epic 70's design, a striated light bar that spans the entire rear fascia, with the tail lights flanking wide. Up front is a fascia you've surely seen on every Quinn Martin production of the era, quad headlights flanking a central grille framed in chrome and a hefty front bumper. A black vinyl top is home to not only the fixed opera windows with a cougar emblem but also a sunroof which operates but also has a crack. 14-inch Magnum 500 wheels have black painted centers and are wrapped in 225/70R14 tires with an early 2025 date code. The car's paint is two stage Charcoal Gray Metallic and new, according to our consignor. It has a wet look from the clear but the entire car has a rough surface, in some places akin to a Rhino coat. There's also subtle shade differences and waviness in the panels and we note paint runs galore and evident filler as well.
Interior
Burgundy leather is beaming with 70's goodness that begins on the door panels that have button accenting and electric window switches with an uncommon left/right labeling on the driver's door, and both panels are in great shape. The split bench shows some patina creasing on the driver's side and also shares button accenting and pillow-like padding, while the rear bench takes button tufting to the next level and presents in near pristine condition. Our steering wheel has been installed upside down and fronts a red faced instrument cluster with simple gauges over a black mid panel that holds an AM/FM radio with 8-track and the Captain and Tennille are cued up. A tufted detail lives on the passenger side dash as an extra measure of opulence. Plush maroon carpet lives on the floor protected by rubber mats and our red headliner is in good condition and the trunk is clean.
Drivetrain
Here we have a 460ci V8 which puts out 202 horsepower and receives fuel through a 4-barrel carburetor. It's backed by a C6 3-speed automatic transmission that routes power to the Ford 9"" in back with 2.75 gears. Power steering, power brakes, and air conditioning are supplied and the bay has an overall clean presentation.
Undercarriage
Clean conditions prevail underneath where we have dual exhaust through stock style mufflers and power brakes arranged as front disc and rear drum. Suspension is achieved with coil springs at all four corners.
Drive-Ability
She starts up and purrs like a...cougar with a smooth idle and pleasantly muffled exhaust note. It makes decent power and tracks straight and the interior is a nice place to be, reminiscent of a classic speakeasy. We note the clock is not working and the Captain and Tennille will have to take the night off because the 8-track is inoperable as well. All other functions on this 70's timepiece work as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
This is a well preserved and relatively uncommon vestige of 70's iron, when U.S. cars still roamed the streets with dominance. The attention to design details is undeniable and now serves as a representation of another era in car manufacturing. A car you'd likely see in car chases on Mannix, Cannon, or Barnaby Jones now presents as a 70's classic!
