"1975 Bricklin SV-1
One of the most interesting characters in the history of the automobile has to be Malcolm Bricklin, the Philadelphia born entrepreneur with a daring spirit and a long list of hits and misses over a career that spanned many decades. He's credited with bringing the first Subarus to America, and one could say he was ahead of his time if not for the weak reception to the 360. He also was responsible for bringing the Yugo to the States and in between these two landmark import efforts was the creation of his namesake car.
For consignment, a 1975 Bricklin SV-1 with a title verified 37,089 actual miles. You'll be happy to learn this one has always been garaged and has an all new air system and newer compressor.
Exterior
There are plenty of wedge shaped cars out there, but there's something unique about the profile of a Bricklin. Maybe it's the protruding neoprene bumpers, the ripples molding into the Safety Red acrylic C-pillar and hood, or the flat sloping rear window. But it's the lack of door handles and of course, the epic gull wing doors that really sets it apart. Car nuts may recognize the tail lights as they were designed from the DeTomaso Pantera and share the rear fascia with a Bricklin call out in bolt font and brushed aluminum. The 15-inch wheels have a turbine design and are wrapped in 215/70R15 tires with a late 2023 date code and period correct ""letters out"". Imperfections include chips, scratches, cracks and areas of cracking including flex cracks throughout, bubbles, a crack in a tail light lens, edge wear, crazing, holes in the side molding, misaligned side molding, missing paint, cracks and surface rust in the door jamb including on the top surface, and wear along the front bumper.
Interior
Up go the doors to reveal a black interior with simple, vinyl door panels that present cleanly while inside, vinyl bolsters with square paneled buttoned cloth inserts cover high back buckets seats and both are in good condition. From there, it's a leather wrapped sport steering wheel for the driver who has a view of the dash with gauges and labeled indicator lights within a plastic faced cluster and that plastic shows some delamination. Up top, the dash pad shows cracks while the center stack holds the A/C panel and Emerson AM/FM/Cassette radio. Smooth, stitched vinyl covers the center console with a relatively small shifter and indicator over black carpet and below a vinyl headliner.
Drivetrain
Under the hood in driver quality visual condition is a 351ci Windsor V8, rated at 177 horsepower and fueled through a 2-barrel carburetor. It's mated to an FMX 3-speed automatic transmission that routes power back to 3.15 gears. The car is equipped with power steering, power brakes, and air conditioning.
Undercarriage
Driver quality conditions underneath as well with some expected surface rust and a few patches and repairs to some cracked fiberglass. True dual exhaust runs through original equipment mufflers and power disc brakes are found on all four corners.
Drive-Ability
Don't judge a book by its cracking cover, as this SV-1 starts, runs, and drives well. They were never as fast as they looked but this is a great cruiser with nothing to prove at red lights! All functional items on this low mileage example work as they should and we fly this gull winged plastic fantastic back to the mall. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
Admit it, when you see a Bricklin at a car show you know exactly what you're looking at! Only 3,000 SV-1's were produced between '74 and '76 and the wild story of the car is captured in a documentary entitled simply ""The Bricklin"" as well as dozens of other videos on YouTube. Love it or hate it, its classic status and fascinating history can not be denied. We've only seen four Bricklins at the mall so they don't come up for sale too often.
