"1973 Ford F100 Long Bed Pickup
""1973 Ford pickups are designed with so many innovations, refinements and useful features, they start a whole generation of better ideas. Whichever model you chose, a gleaming bright grille and front bumper are standard and so is the Twin I-beam independent front suspension, the exclusive feature that contributes so much to Ford's work like a truck, rides like a car design."" From the 1973 Ford Truck brochure
For consignment, a 1973 Ford F100 long bed pickup showing 16,125 miles, but the true miles are unknown. Within the past 2,000 miles accumulated on the truck, many new items have been installed including fuel, ignition, brake, cosmetic, and engine components. If you're looking for a well sorted F100, the well is deep on this one!
Exterior
Indeed, a gleaming grille and bumper faces us, carrying marker lights above the headlights, a configuration that would hang around until 1978 when the marker was moved below. Meanwhile, Wimbledon White covers this long truck, exhibiting a bit of tasty patina with small patches of surface rust where paint once lived. There are slightly deeper issues throughout the rocker and lower panels where many rust bubbles have formed and some have cracked. To us, this makes the truck usable without worry rather than a garage queen! Decidedly square with vertical tail lights bookending the Ford stamped tailgate while a color matched roll pan replaces the diamond steel rear bumper, which is in the bed. Big windows, including a rear slider, and narrow pillars allow light to stream in the cab and allow views into the rough coated bed, and amber cab lights give the F100 big presence at night.
Interior
The blue plastic door panels are in fine shape with some typical scratching you'd find in a work truck. Inside, a blue bench combines two shades and is constructed of durable grain vinyl. A three spoke steering wheel shares the column with the shifter and front a simple, no frills dash that relays pertinent information to the driver while vent controls sit to the right. The dash pad has some cracks and patina, and the floor is coated with the rough Rhino stuff. Up top, a plastic headliner holds speakers and an AM/FM/CD radio.
Drivetrain
Under the hood, a driver quality 302ci V8 with a 2-barrel carburetor in front of a C4 3-speed automatic routing power to the Ford 9"" in back. Power front disc brakes work with the rear power drums for the stopping power. Among the newer items, per our consignor, include the master cylinder, fuel pump, front brakes and calipers, belts, alternator, carb, ignition switch, battery, and the heads were rebuilt in August, 2023.
Undercarriage
Driver quality underneath with gobs of patina and surface rust on major steel components. We note some oil on the rear differential. Meanwhile, a single exhaust travels through a Magnaflow muffler, then splits to form an exhaust pipe ending in expanded chrome tips. Suspension consists of radius arm with coil springs up front and leaf springs in the back.
Drive-Ability
Springsteen sang, ""Went out and hopped in my old Ford, hit the engine but she ain't turning."". Well, he wasn't talking about this old Ford, because the 302 fires right up and idles smoothly as we put it in Drive and take a lap on the loop. There's plenty of power here and the no nonsense interior doesn't distract from the straight tracking, clean running, and good stopping driving experience. We note that the headlights, front turn signals, and reverse lights are not working. So, it's going to be straight, daytime driving for now! While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
If you're looking for a classic Ford truck you can use without worrying about marring a show truck, this one is ready for a new stable. Classic enough to be cool, rough enough to be used, simple enough to be loved. Of course, if your desire is to have a show truck, this one's got good bones, as they say, and could be the next hot commodity in the red hot world of vintage restored and resto mod classic pickups!
