"1973 Buick Centurion Convertible
""Buick replaced the Wildcat name as their middle senior car series in 1971 with a new appellation, the Centurion. The company had played the same game in 1963 when it replaced the Invicta line with the Wildcat. Below it remained the LeSabre, and above it remained the Electra 225. The 1973 cars debuted with a revised tail and rear crash bumpers added, as well as changes to trim and details. The base engine was changed to the Buick built 350 cubic inch engine, but the line up remained the same. The Centurion name was retired after this model year, replaced by LeSabre in 1974."" For consignment, a 1973 Buick Centurion convertible with a title verified 61,624 actual miles. During the New Testament era, a Roman centurion was a professional military officer commanding a platoon of troops called a ""century,"" in case you were wondering where Buick got the name.
Exterior
This shade of green was used heavily in the early 70's and whether that was your kitchen appliances, wall mounted telephone, or car, it was a design element in vogue at the time. On this car, its two stage Green Gold Metallic draping the long sweeping panels of this big car. Like the tufts on a centurion's helmet, a white pinstripe starts in the front and tracks back along the side and canting downward along the enormous rear fender and impossibly long overhang. A white canvas top and white wall tires create a well coordinated design and Buick Rally wheels bump up the sportiness of this Fairfax, Kansas assembled product of Detroit. The front fascia is wide with quad headlights in chrome bezels underscored by a substantial bumper. Overall, the body and metalwork are in great shape with imperfections noted as some chips, scuffs, scratches, painted over rough surfaces near rocker, blistering, evident filler, and some peeling rubber on the bumper.
Interior
We're met with Neutral plastics and vinyl on the door panels with the era requisite simulated wood trim, model call out, and gold carpet insert. It's develop some slight discoloration over the years but remains in very good and fully intact condition. Button ornamentation adorns the ivory vinyl split bench seat up front with its pull down armrest, and the rear bench, both in good condition with a touch of age. The real attraction is up front where the three spoke steering wheel fronts a wraparound, driver focused dashboard with an arching speedometer in the middle, A/C panel to the left, clock and AM/FM radio to the right, all within the viewshed of the driver and all framed in plastic wood overlay and in nice shape. A wood face storage box lives on the floor's tunnel hump over gold twist carpet and vintage style Buick branded rubber mats. The clean trunk also has a Tri-shield emblem on the protective mat and houses a spare and jack.
Drivetrain
We would have no hesitation opening the hood at a show with this clean bay and 350ci V8, topped by a 4-barrel carburetor and putting out 175 horsepower. It's backed by a TH350 3-speed automatic transmission that routes power to the 10 bolt rear axle with 3.08 gears. Power brakes, power steering and air conditioning are on board and we couldn't help notice the yellowish plastic of the fan shroud under the hood, an uncommon configuration.
Undercarriage
Lots of surface rust underneath including under the doors, but overall free of debris and errant fluids. The single exhaust travels through a stainless steel muffler on its way to a polished tip exit. Power brakes are here as front disc and rear drum and suspension entails coil springs at both ends with a 4 link in back.
Drive-Ability
Good solid transportation with a clean and reliable 350 that glides this green machine across the test loop with flying colors. We're on 23 year old tires here so take turns with care and the car still tracks straight and functions 100% with the exception of the dash mounted clock. But that's what cell phones are for, right? While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
A stunning time capsule of a time when many of us grew up, relegated to the back seat or in hardtops, lounging on the package tray behind those seats! Not many people preserved these or took the time to even repaint them. This one serves as an excellent example ready for shows, cruise nights, and topless summer runs.
