"1972 Dodge Challenger Hardtop
For some of us, first exposure to the Pink Panther came in the form of animated shorts during our Saturday morning television routines, backed by the iconic music. Others may associate it with the Peter Sellers films that came before the cartoons, made emblematic with scenes like the infamous ""Does your dog bite""? exchange. Ultimately, it was that unique shade of pink used in the cartoon that along with the cat and the song, made the term ""Pink Panther"" a household name and beloved cultural comedy icon.
For consignment, a 1972 Dodge Challenger hardtop with a title verified 85,633 actual miles, dressed in Panther Pink, a color used sparingly on some 1970 models. In fact, only .1% of Challenger R/T's wore the color and only one convertible.
Exterior
You'll definitely turn some heads with this one. Nowadays, any 1972 Challenger will turn heads with its iconic design. But one adorned in Panther Pink is the cat's meow! But let's talk about that design, which some would argue is the best of the muscle/pony car generation. Dual headlights under a straight hood line flanking a gaping grille in a narrow space delineated by a straight, chrome bumper are features that are instantly recognizable. Add dual intakes on the edge of a black stripe and raised panel on the hood, and you've got the makings of an appropriately aggressive face. The midline rises slightly over the rear wheels, drawing your eyes to the short tail, black spoiler, and blackened rear fascia housing dual tail lights over square quad exhaust tips. 14-inch American Racing Torque Thrust wheels complete the racy exterior and a Pink Panther graphic on each rear fender put an exclamation point on it! Imperfections include chipping paint, bubbling paint, paint runs, a misaligned roll pan, rough bondo on the door sill and rear quarter, more bubbling on the roof, the rear quarter panels being pop riveted over the old panels, a crack at both C-pillars at the end of the drip rail, and some at the gas cap.
Interior
Handsome black molded door panels include a simulated wood insert in a cove that serves as the armrest and both doors present cleanly. So do the tall black vinyl bucket seats with stitch patterned, textured inserts, and integrated headrest. The non matching grain vinyl on the rear bench is in excellent condition. A simple two spoke steering wheel leads to the offset instrument cluster in which the large speedometer is set to the left of the accordion column while smaller gauges line up to the right. Down low, an AM/FM radio is present with vent control on the left, while a twin pod is added under the dash which shows a touch of patina. The center console houses a T-handle shifter in a semi shrouded and woodgrain based platform which flows into a locking storage bin. Our black loop carpet below shows some age while the perforated headliner above is in good condition. The trunk shows use and houses a spare and jack.
Drivetrain
A clean bay awaits and houses 360ci Magnum V8 from the 90's, topped by a Holley 4-barrel carburetor and mated to an A727 Torqueflite 3-speed automatic sending power to the 8 3/4 inch rear. Headers are on board, visible just under the Mopar finned valve covers. Brake configuration is front discs and rear drums.
Undercarriage
Driver quality underneath with surface rust in typical places, a few drops of red on the trans pan, and some minor Swiss cheese on thin metal panels that don't appear to be structural. Torsion bar suspension is found up front and leaf springs with traction bars are out back. The dual exhaust travels through FlowMaster mufflers before exiting with polished tips.
Drive-Ability
We take our place in the classically comfortable interior and crank the 360 to life at which time it lets out a mighty Mopar roar from the exhaust tips. The car provides plenty of power, shifts well, and tracks straight. Notable non-functioning items include the horn, wipers, turn signals, tail lights, and reverse lights. We also note that the right rear tire rubs over bumps. Beyond these things, remaining operational items work as intended. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
The original Pink Panther films were centered around a pink diamond that had a flaw in it that resembled a leaping panther. Well, here we have a similar situation, a diamond of the Mopar world with a few things that need some attention. You might never see a 1970 Panther Pink Challenger and neither will many others. So imagine the jaw dropping presence you'll make at the next car show with this ""one of none"" example!
