1972 ChevroletCamaro Hardtop
1972 represented a substantial year in the Camaro world. With impending emission and safety regulations looming, not to mention a rise in gas prices, discussion of the F-body being on the chopping block was circulating. With morale low and a future unknown, 1972 would be the last year for the SS model, speedometers would be reduced from 150 to 130, and the partnership with Hurst shifters would end.
For consignment, a 1972 Chevrolet Camaro hardtop showing 895 miles, but the true miles are unknown. These miles likely refer to the rebuild of the 383ci stroker under the hood and the transmission that backs it up. 68,651 Camaros were built in 1972 with a large majority of them, 63,830 had V8's with 5 eight cylinder engine specifications available.
Exterior
It's no accident that traffic cones are orange, they get your attention! So do cars when that color is chosen, as it is here with two stage Flame Orange on our vintage F-body and while many will argue about which Camaro was best, everyone can agree that the split bumper, round tail light version of '72 is spectacular. This example's looks are enhanced with a cowl hood, a rear spoiler, and US Mag Wheels, 17-inch front, 18-inch in the rear, that give the car a fresh profile and shaved door handles give it an extra smooth look. Up front, the famed split bumper surrounds a gaping black eggcrate grille while sizable marker lights slide under the chrome. Hood pins hold down the cowled hood and stock style side mirrors are posted on both sides. Check your pulse if the back doesn't excite you, quad tail lights on a slightly raised tail and a muscular wing on back...the stuff of cruise night dreams. A crack in the rear valance, and some orange peel to the paint, along with areas of body filler are the only exterior imperfections we pick out.
Interior
A pop of the key fob opens the doors where we find black vinyl door panels, simple and clean. Newer racing style bucket seats occupy the front with integrated headrest and harness gap, and gobs of side support, lined with red stitching. Meanwhile, the black vinyl 2+2 seating in back appears standard. A wood rimmed 3 spoke steering wheel fronts the dash where instruments are housed in a smooth aluminum faceplate with sides that cant towards the center. An AM/FM/CD player from the modern century is mounted in the center of the dash just ahead of the horseshoe shifter and center console with storage. Black loop carpet is protected by Z28 branded carpeted mats and the black headliner above is sag city, but intact. The trunk is lined with a houndstooth vinyl mat topped by a Sony Xplod amplifier.
Drivetrain
Pop the pins and open the hood to find a rebuilt, consignor stated 383ci stroker V8 with a QuickFuel 4-barrel carburetor. Behind it, a rebuilt TH350 3-speed automatic driving power to the 10 bolt axle with 3.73 gears and Positraction. A power booster is evident in the clean bay, assisting disc brakes up front and drums in the rear. Headers are here to route the spent fuel backwards.
Undercarriage
Super clean underneath with almost zero surface rust and no oil or wet spots visible. Dual exhaust runs through FlowMaster mufflers and then quickly terminates under the car. Suspension consists of coil springs up front and leaf springs in the rear.
Drive-Ability
The 383 roars to life and makes no bones about its potential on the street. We glide this orange dream across our test loop and find impressive acceleration, good handling, and braking on demand. The functionality test proves to be fruitful as all items operate as intended and we bring her back to the mall to get her ready for her close up! While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
Great looks, powerful engine, and some modern creature comforts. If there's one way to get your daily dose of vitamin C, it's with this Camaro. We can't guarantee the bright color will prevent colds, but we can assure you it will raise your temperature. If a split bumper has been on your bucket list, this one is worth a look.
