"1971 Harley Davidson FLP Shovelhead
The Shovelhead engine replaced the Panhead in 1966 and with several iterations and changes, it ran through 1984. It got its name from the rocker covers which resembled upside down coal shovels. The engine had 10% more power and its introduction increased Harley Davidson sales by 26% in the early part of its introduction.
For consignment, a 1971 Harley Davidson show bike built by famed vintage bike builder, William Eggers. Our consignor tells us this bike has been featured at one time or another in every motorcycle magazine in the country. And for good reason, not only does the bike have custom leatherwork to the extent rarely seen, but it has extra lights and other features that make it a standout. Named ""The Iron Horse"" this bike deserves to be shown, ridden in parades, and maybe even residing in a museum!
Exterior
The base color is yellow and it brightly covers the fenders and tank. The beefy chrome fork leads to chrome drum brake covers. The front fender has a chrome accent piece that protrudes like a brush guard and on top of the fender is a large painted leather Bald Eagle riveted to the fender. The sides of the tank are not painted rather a custom teardrop shaped leather Iron Horse appliques are affixed to the tank. The seat is a black leather horse saddle augmented by rhinestone decorated pieces that extend over the rear fender and continue onto the saddle bags on each side. The rear contains a horseshoe shaped chrome structure housing nine bullet shaped red lights that surround the standard taillight. The rear fender is extended by more leather, bejeweled and double loop laced. The highway bars are wrapped in thick jute twine for even more western flair and the footrests are wrapped in laced leather.
Functionality
A speedometer with digits from 1 to 12 keeps things simple and a bright red needle indicates your given speed. The handlebars are simple as well and the brake and clutch levers are straight and robust. Suspension is handled by front cartridges and a rear swing arm with twin shocks. 16-inch chrome wire wheels are halted by drum brakes on front and back.
Drivetrain
A 1200cc V-twin rated at 57.5 horsepower sits between your knees and is fed by a 1-barrel carburetor and moves via a 4-speed manual transmission, chain driven to the rear wheel. The bike has dual exhaust which flows straight back via chrome pipes.
This is a spectacular showpiece for the Harley or motorcycle collector but this would also look great in an automotive display as well. Leatherwork abounds in a truly artful display and that saddle seat is epic! Grab the reins of this one before someone else rides off into the sunset with it!
