Zoom Classic Cars presents this 1971 Alfa Romeo Spider Convertible — Documented Restoration ProjectHere is a nice opportunity to acquire a 1971 Alfa Romeo Spider, one of Alfa Romeo\'s most recognizable and enduring sports cars, with an unusually compelling history and a substantial amount of mechanical work already completed.This is a solid, mechanically sound running and driving project that began life as a true barn find. The car had reportedly been sitting inside a barn for more than 45 years before being rescued and taken on as an ambitious restoration project by restorer Max Godbey. The entire transformation—from neglected barn find to running and driving Alfa Romeo—is documented in a remarkable 53-minute restoration video.The Alfa Romeo Spider traces its origins to 1966, when Alfa Romeo introduced its new two-seat roadster at the Geneva Motor Show. Designed by Pininfarina and based on Alfa Romeo\'s Giulia platform, the Spider combined elegant Italian styling with Alfa\'s famous twin-cam four-cylinder engine and sporting chassis. The original 1600 Spider quickly became known as the \"Duetto.\" Alfa Romeo itself recognizes the 1600 Spider Duetto as one of the iconic models in its history. The Spider\'s Hollywood appearance in the 1967 film The Graduate, where Dustin Hoffman drove a red Duetto, helped establish the little Alfa as an international automotive icon and significantly increased its visibility in the American market. For 1970, Alfa Romeo introduced the substantially revised second-generation Spider, replacing the original rounded \"boat-tail\" or osso di seppia rear with the more angular \"Coda Tronca\", or \"cut-tail,\" design. The new shape was influenced by aerodynamic principles associated with German aerodynamicist Wunibald Kamm and gave the Spider a more contemporary appearance while retaining the unmistakable Pininfarina character. That makes this 1971 example particularly interesting to enthusiasts: it is an early Coda Tronca Spider, retains the chrome-bumper configuration, and is powered by the sought-after 1750cc Alfa Romeo twin-cam engine.The 1750 engine was introduced into the Spider range in the late 1960s, and the 1750 Spider Veloce represented a significant performance and refinement upgrade over the earlier 1600. The 1750 featured Alfa Romeo\'s celebrated four-cylinder twin-cam architecture and was paired with the company\'s excellent five-speed manual transmission. The 1750 Spider continued through 1972, while Alfa Romeo introduced the larger 2000 Spider alongside it in 1971.The Spider\'s combination of relatively light weight, independent front suspension, rear-wheel drive, four-wheel disc brakes and a five-speed gearbox helped establish the model\'s reputation as an exceptionally entertaining driver\'s car. The five-speed manual transmission was a defining feature of the classic Spider range. The early 1970s cars are particularly appealing because they retain the clean, chrome-bumper appearance before the later U.S.-market cars received the substantially larger black rubber bumper treatment required for North American regulations. This particular Spider has a history that sets it apart from the typical project car.After spending more than four decades in a barn, the car was acquired by restorer Max Godbey, who undertook an extensive seven-month effort to bring it back to running and driving condition.Max documented virtually the entire process in a 53-minute YouTube video, including the teardown, mechanical work, bodywork, paint, wiring and ultimately the car\'s first drive.As Max describes the project, what began as a neglected Alfa Romeo became a complete mechanical and cosmetic resurrection performed in his home garage. Most importantly for the next owner, the video provides a detailed record of the car\'s condition and the work that went into bringing it back to life. The work is documented in the video, providing prospective buyers with an opportunity to actually see how the car looked when the restoration began and follow its transformation.The Alfa is now a mostly rust-free, solid example, with straight and solid body panels, a solid trunk compartment and a sound undercarriage. There is some minor rust remaining as shown, that should be addressed, and the exterior would benefit from a quality repaint.The current owner acquired the car in 2023 and has continued to improve and maintain it. Over approximately the last three years, the following work has been completed:Weber carburetors, Aluminum radiator, New fuel tank, New fuel sending unit, New alternator, Original wheels cleaned, refinished and painted and mounted with 4 new General Altimax RT tires, with less than 500 miles, New Alfa Romeo wood steering wheel and new exhaust. Mechanically, the car is solid and running and driving, making this a great project for someone who wants to enjoy an Alfa while continuing its cosmetic restoration rather than beginning with a non-running vehicle. The next stage of this car\'s life is primarily cosmetic. The body is fundamentally solid, but the existing paint is older and the car would benefit greatly from a professional repaint. There is some minor rust remaining as shown that should be addressed as part of that work. The interior also needs attention. The existing manual convertible top is worn out and will need be replaced, the upholstery needs restoration or replacement, and the dashboard has cracking as shown in the photographs. In other words, the next owner has the opportunity to decide exactly how far to take the car. It can be enjoyed as an honest, mechanically sorted vintage Alfa while improvements are made over time, or it can become the basis for a more comprehensive cosmetic restoration. A future owner can watch the restoration video and see the car before the restoration, follow the body repairs and mechanical work, and watch the moment this long-dormant Alfa returned to the road. Alfa Romeo itself maintains an extensive Heritage program for its historic vehicles, including production information, original configuration and certification services, underscoring the continuing interest in preserving the marque\'s historic cars.A great candidate for an enthusiast looking for an authentic early Alfa Spider that can be driven as-is and progressively improved, or taken through a complete cosmetic restoration to create a truly special example of one of Alfa Romeo\'s most beloved models.
