"1970 Chevrolet Nova 2 Door Sedan
""Not too small. Not too large. Which makes a lot of people happy. Small enough to make long trips seem like the gas economy runs. Big enough for up to six adults and their luggage"". From the 1970 sale brochure. 254,242 Novas were produced and sold in 1970 and of them, 19,588 were SS performance models while a great majority were commuter based cars including 2 door and 4 door models.
For consignment, a 1970 Chevrolet Nova 2 door sedan showing 11,897 miles, but the true miles are unknown. Despite a repaint, this car represents a real survivor with some authentic patina and a numbers matching engine.
Exterior
Vo-Tech students put their best foot forward to paint this car and not a bad job applying two stage Green Mist paint which presents a bit better than the metalwork, which shows patina in the form of surface rust and light pitting. 14-inch steel wheels carry the green paint and dog dish hubcaps stamped with the bowtie emblem, wrapped in 30 year old white wall tires. A strip of black molding runs midway through the car from end to end and a B-pillar post tilts gently to the rear. The classic styling includes wheel openings that vary in size, from full arches in front to overhanging and more narrow openings in back. Imperfections include some underpaint, scratches, orange peel, bubbling, paint runs, filler repair in the wheel well, chrome that is deplating, and some surface rust.
Interior
Dark green door panels are mostly intact with the armrests taking the brunt of usage and showing it. Inside, dark green vinyl sidewalls support the green cloth split bench seats up front and the basic bench in back, both in decent condition. Our green steering wheel suffers from some cracks on the rim but the center section remains in good shape, fronting a horizontal speedometer with sweeping red needle. There's an AM radio and a vertical vent panel under a green dash pad that has a crack. The open floor is covered with a rubberized coating that also shows some age, and the headliner appears in good shape with one hole and the visors exhibit some loose stitching and separation. The dome light has yellowed with time and the trunk has a slightly weathered, fitted rubber mat.
Drivetrain
Under the hood, not only original looking, but the actual numbers matching 230ci inline six cylinder engine with a 1-barrel carburetor and rated at 140 horsepower. It's mated to a Powerglide 2-speed automatic transmission that routes power to the 10 bolt rear axle with 2.73 gears.
Undercarriage
Lots of patina underneath and our eyes also find a pan repair under the trunk floor. There's some residual oil on the pan and the rear differential and some typical surface rust about. A single exhaust runs through a stock style muffler and exits in back. Drum brakes are found on all four wheels and suspension includes coil springs up front and leaf springs in the back.
Drive-Ability
We move the column shifter into position after starting the six cylinder and find our way to the test loop, during which we note a lifter tap. Beyond that, the car runs fine and we keep our drive short due to the age of the tires. Functionally speaking, we note the radio, horn, and headlights are not working, but all other functions operate as intended. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
Here's one with good bones and lots of options; drive it as is and be proud of a survivor! Restore it and show it for the once ubiquitous car it is! Or, dare we say, resto-mod this green machine and create the muscle car of your dreams. But hold on to that numbers matching engine! The choice is that of the owner.
