"1970 BMW R75/5 Motorcycle
""While the hottest bikes in the BMW line were never noted ripping up asphalt at the drag strip, the new 750 R75/5 will. It's a superbike. Kind of. But it's not a Superbike in character. The tradition goes on uninterrupted, and the many design changes to the R75/5, in spite of some disregard to the human engineering factor, will make sure it goes on, better and faster."" Part of Cycle World's extensive review, December 1970
For consignment, a 1970 BMW R75/5 motorcycle with a title verified 4,846 actual miles. This well preserved R75, according to our knowledgeable consignor, is an early production example and presents in fantastic condition, but has been in storage so will need some work before you ride off into the sunset.
Exterior
The blue and white BMW logo breaks up a the black of gas tank which is also adorned with integrated knee pads of textured rubber in a shape that perfectly contours with the tank profile. White pinstripes encircle the sides of the tank and are matched by those on the black fenders, and the white trim of the black vinyl saddle which is also accented by ivory piping, center strap, and side grab handles. This is a handsome bike with an upright, square posture and large headlight encased in black painted housing. Flashy chrome is reserved for the exhaust which flanks each side, and the wire wheels, 19-inch front and 18-rear. The engine itself in enveloped in more of a cast iron finish, clean and purposeful.
Functionality
Slight patina but more a detailing issue on the rubber grips and thumb controls otherwise presenting in solid, clean condition. The speedometer and tachometer split the circle on the gauge embedded in the headlight housing and a singular metal gas cap sits atop the tank. Orange marker lights are providing front and rear while fixed foot pegs are there for the driver and fold ups for the passenger.
Drivetrain
According to the review, a new camshaft was employed in '70 and pistons and rings improved, along with other changes that helped the 745cc Boxer 2 produce 54 horsepower through two Bing 32mm one barrel carburetors. A 4-speed manual transfers power through a shaft drive using a flywheel with reduced weight in '70, resulting in smoother shifts. Drum brakes are employed front and rear while suspension is comprised of telescopic fork in front and swing arm with dual shocks in the back. Obviously, thanks to the stylish chrome pipes, dual exhaust is onboard.
""The seat is one of the most comfortable we've seen,"" write Cycle World, ""and the passenger portion seems almost orthopedic. It couldn't be better, and can be locked to protect the tool kit"". This particular example has no modifications and is ready to take up residence in your new or established motorcycle collection.
