Introduced in 1967, Plymouth’s mid-size Belvedere GTX was a serious contender in the showroom and on the street, featuring a high-image, high-performance approach similar to Pontiac’s GTO. Available in hardtop and convertible body styles with heavy-duty mechanicals including the carefully engineered suspension, the GTX was powered by Chrysler’s 375-horsepower “Super Commando” 440 CI V-8 engine standard, with the 426 Hemi optional. Tastefully finished with minimal ornamentation, the aggressive, yet sophisticated GTX included a well-appointed interior with bucket seats, and a center console. Handsomely restyled on Chrysler’s new “B-Body” Belvedere for 1968, the GTX continued in this basic form through 1970 and remains one of the quickest of all American supercars, with the 440-powered GTX capable of quarter-mile blasts in under 14 seconds.
Featuring an exceptionally well detailed rotisserie restoration, this 1969 Plymouth GTX hardtop is a show-quality example from top to bottom, including the fully restored underbody, chassis and suspension. Finished in Ivy Green with painted Black stripes under clear coat, the GTX is complemented by a Black textured vinyl roof and outstanding chrome and bright trim. The Green-upholstered interior is impressive in keeping with the rest of the car and features bucket seats, OEM seat belts, a center console, floor shifter, and Chrysler Solid State AM radio. In addition to a dash-mounted factory tachometer, instruments include added Sunproof coolant-temperature and oil pressure gauges. Air conditioning, including a modern r134a compressor with a polished housing, delivers additional comfort. The tinted rear window and all side windows are OEM Chrysler “Safeguard” scripted glass items.
Power is provided by Plymouth’s legendary L-Code 440 CI “Super Commando” V-8 engine, factory-rated at 375 horsepower and 490 pounds-feet of pavement-melting torque. Induction is via Plymouth’s functional Air Grabber cold-air intake system, including the large, high-flow oval “Coyote Duster” air cleaner assembly. Factory exhaust manifolds feed the full-length dual exhaust system with factory chrome tips. Supporting items include an aluminum radiator and recovery tank, polished alternator, transmission cooler, and battery cut-off. A Chrysler A-727 Torqueflite 3-speed automatic transmission and 4.10:1 Dana 60 rear end deliver the power to a great-looking set of chrome and black Magnum 500 wheels mounting a set of Redline radial tires. Power front disc/rear drum brakes and power-assisted steering ensure a comfortable drive. The restored trunk includes a factory-correct plaid vinyl floor mat and houses a mounted spare Magnum 500 wheel/radial tire.
A true “Executive Hot Rod,” Plymouth’s Belvedere GTX delivered performance with style and class. It remains one of the less commonly seen American high-performance cars of the late 1960s, and this beautifully restored example from 1969 is sure to please. Appraised value of $145,000 CAD. Canadian tax is not applicable.
