This 1969 Plymouth Barracuda is one of approximately 45 M-code notchback coupes that were produced with a 440ci 375hp Super Commando V8, all of which were equipped with 727 TorqueFlite three-speed automatic transmissions. This car is said to have been purchased new in Washington state and relocated to Minnesota with its original owner, and it was sold in 1977 to a person in Tennessee. The first two owners drag-raced the ’Cuda in the F/SA class periodically between 1969 and 1981, reportedly achieving a quickest quarter-mile elapsed time of 11.40 seconds, when the car had headers, a performance camshaft, and drag slicks. The vehicle was stored in 1985 with 3,100 miles showing on the odometer, sold again in 1988 to be restored in Kentucky and finished in 1989 to as is now. During a process that involved repainting the exterior to remove racing lettering and decals, also reinstalling original factory-style exhaust manifolds.
The engine was replaced under prior ownership with a 1969-dated E-440 HP–coded 440ci V8. The car is finished in F5 Limelight Metallic over green vinyl upholstery, and equipment includes a limited-slip differential, twin hood scoops (non functional), black tape stripes, body-color 14″ steel wheels, hubcaps, Firestone red-line tires, 4 wheel drum brakes, front bucket seats, a center console, and an AM radio. I purchased the car in 2018 and has since added approximately 40-50 of the car’s indicated 6,879 original miles. This M-code notchback Barracuda is now offered with a broadcast sheet, magazine articles featuring the car, a copy of the 440 ’Cuda Registry, an owner’s manual, and a clean North Carolina title in the my name.
This car is listed as one of 19 registered 440 ’Cuda notchback-coupes documented in the A body M registry which was updated in July 2002 and is included in the sale. Plymouth manufactured an estimated *298 fastback Cuda’s and *45 M-code Barracuda notchbacks for 1969, compared to 640 M-code Dart GTS models. This is the rarest of all A or B body M code cars built in mid 1969.
The vehicle was featured in Musclecar Classics magazine in April 1990. MorPerformance magazine featured the Barracuda in a longer article in its May 1991 issue, which will accompany the car and is viewable in the photo gallery below. Car Craft has covered the vehicle as well, it was used to advertise the M-code A-body display at the 2009 Carlisle All-Chrysler Nationals, and a 2009 calendar from NAPA auto parts showed the Plymouth on its page for the month of March.
