"1969 Oldsmobile Cutlass S Convertible
""A wild blue yonder kind of excitement: Olds Cutlass S. Run of the mill cars got you feeling grounded? Spread your wings in a Cutlass S. Rocket 350 V8, or big 250 Action-Line six, louvered hood, hideaway windshield wipers and new GM safety features, all standard. Want to really send the ordinary into a tailspin. Order yours with bucket seats, center console, G.T. stripes! Price? Right down your runway."" From a 1969 print ad.
For consignment, a 1969 Oldsmobile Cutlass S convertible with a title verified 169,250 actual miles. This car has its numbers matching 350 Rocket V8 and represents one of the 13,498 examples that were produced in 1969.
Exterior
Two stage Cameo White paint covers the car complemented by a polished trim piece that follows the contours of the waistline and tops fenders at both ends. The view from behind includes the curved trunk lid, flush mounted bumper, and simple vertical tail lights that follow the body lines with precision. Black colors the inserts of the 15-inch Oldsmobile Super Stock II wheels, wrapped in 235/60R15 tires. The side markers on the front fender are a simple square lens, but out back the marker takes on the Oldsmobile rocket logo in a tasty little design cue that's easy to miss. The black canvas top is in good shape though has a few tears and repairs, and the plastic window shows some haze. Other imperfections include chips throughout, cracking paint, a few bubbles, gap filler between a fender and rocker, scratches, and scuffs.
Interior
Contrasting red vinyl door panels welcome occupants with a stitch pattern and smooth sections and both show a good bit of patina with discolored vinyl and plastics. The bucket vinyl seats also show age but other than a tear in the driver's seat, remain fully intact while the rear bench presents cleanly. Our red steering wheel follows suit with the age and fronts a simple dashboard with three coves housing the gauges including one blank circle. A modest A/C panel in the mid panel with faded paint from years of adjusting the lever, and an AM radio is reachable by both occupants. The center console consists of a chrome frame around burlwood accenting and a brown knobbed shifter, with patina but still very cool looking, and it's over decent red carpet on the floor. We find the trunk barren with touches of surface rust and a spare tire.
Drivetrain
The gold engine is a like a gem under the hood and it just happens to be the car's numbers matching 350ci Rocket V8 with a 4-barrel carburetor. It's backed by the TH350 3-speed automatic transmission that sends power to the 12 bolt rear axle. The car is equipped with power brakes, power steering, and air conditioning.
Undercarriage
We find mostly clean and dry conditions underneath and a solid structure. There's some oily soot build up on the rear differential and a few drops of oil on the pan, but otherwise just some basic patina. Dual exhaust travels cleanly through FlowMaster mufflers and exits out back through steel pipes. Power drum brakes are at all four wheels and suspension consists of coil springs at both ends with a 4 link in back.
Drive-Ability
This survivor still delivers a strong ride with a decent exhaust note and good throttle response. We're riding with the top up and on older tires, but we can just imagine the fun this A-body will provide with the top down and some new shoes! We note the A/C, radio and left turn signals don't work, but all other functions do operate. We also note the car will need a heater core. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
No gutless Cutlass here as 350's were known to put out at least 250 horsepower. This car could be driven as is or restored to higher polished show quality, but we'll leave that up to you. Either way, you're looking at a sun loving survivor with a clean exterior and attractive and able engine.
