"1969 Oldsmobile Cutlass S Club Coupe
""Run of the mill cars got you feeling grounded? Spread your wings and soar in a Cutlass S. Want to really send the ordinary into a tailspin? Order yours with bucket seats, center console, G.T. stripes! Price? Right down your runway. Every Cutlass sports an easy to take low price. Escape from the ordinary!"" From the 1969 Oldsmobile sale brochure.
For consignment, a 1969 Oldsmobile Cutlass S club coupe with a title verified 63,688 actual miles. The body was restored between 2013 and 2016, and the engine, transmission, rear, and suspension have all received a bit of massaging.
Exterior
The deep dark Cordovan Brown Metallic paint that flows over the smooth panels is sharply contrasted by trim that's found at the base of the C-pillar, at the wheel openings, and surrounding the cabin. Chrome bumpers hug body lines and the rear unit also contours to make room for the tail lights with a split at the reverse lights, all at the end of a smooth decklid and sloping rear window. Up front, the quad headlights are enhanced with yellow lenses on the brights while 15-inch Summit Racing Drag Thrust wheels carry staggered size tires for a muscular, slightly raked stance. This is one clean A-body with very few flaws; the only imperfections we find is some light pitting, a scuff, and a bubble in the plating on the bumpers.
Interior
A Gold interior begins on the door panels with vertical tuck and roll over a smooth lower delineated by polished trim, each door containing two window cranks that include the vent window and both panels presenting cleanly. The vinyl split bench shows a touch of age, especially on the driver's side where there's a seam tear in the headrest and some general discoloration while the rear bench remains practically pristine, each with a ghost like diamond pattern throughout. A GT Grant steering wheel brings things into the 21st century but not for long as the rest of the dash looks factory original and clean, based in varying shades of gold plastics and holding a mock radio rather than an open panel for radio delete. A triple gauge pod has been added and the open floor is covered in black carpet with gold rubber mats and the palette continues on the headliner which holds the shoulder belts and suffers from a tear.
Drivetrain
Under the hood is a super clean 455ci V8 with ported heads, bored .030 over, Wiseco 10.5:1 pistons, Comp Cams hydraulic cam, put together on a fully balanced rotating assembly. Behind it, a TH400 3-speed automatic transmission is sending power to the 12 bolt rear axle with 3.08 gears and Positraction. The car has headers, power steering and power brakes that include a new master cylinder, booster, and brake lines.
Undercarriage
Clean on the underside as well where more performance mods are found. The dual exhaust finds an X-pipe that flows through Black Widow Venom mufflers just before emitting short, downfacing exhaust tips under the car. Suspension includes QA1 24 way adjustable shocks with coil springs in front and QA1 18 way adjustables in the rear along with a 4 link. Power disc brakes occupy the front while power drums are in the back.
Drive-Ability
We'd be satisfied just sitting here letting the car idle, it sounds so good! Let's see what else it can do. This well sorted Cutlass performs well on the test loop, tracking straight and providing good power and the smaller than stock steering wheel comes in handy during turns. We note the horn and heater blower are not working but all other functions on this well sorted Club Coupe operate as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
A smooth body, great paint, clean interior and mechanically sound, this shining example from 1969 is better than new in some ways! There were twelve trim levels to the Cutlass in 1969 with the pillared version designed as the Club Coupe and offered an affordable entry point into the lineup. This one's been tastefully built into a clean, street bruiser.
