"While there is no doubting the unique of a classic Jeep, this one is unlike any other Jeep out there. Affectionately dubbed the ""Jeep-Type"" or ""Jag Rod,"" this is the culmination of a three-year project to build the most radical Jag Rod out there.
The foundation is a 1969 Jeepster Commando body that has been chopped, tubbed and lowered. It has a Ford Mustang II front suspension with disc brakes and coilovers in the rear. This is one of 11,289 Jeepster Commandos made in 1969 and definitely the only that looks like this.
This modified Jeep rolls on a mixture of radials Kumho in rear, 235/70R15 and Solus in front, 185/65R15. Each tire is mounted to a flat disk wheel, akin to those seen on racers setting land speed records on the Great Salt Lake in Utah. This Jeep rides a 101-inch wheelbase.
Under the hood is a 4.2L inline six-cylinder from a donor Jaguar. Backing the donor motor is a four-speed automatic transmission.
Inside, 'spartan' does not begin to describe things. There are a pair of black cloth bucket seats but no carpet, no mats, no headliner but a canvas top. There's an aftermarket three-spoke steering wheel and a floor-mounted shifter. The inside of the doors and dashboard are all in good, original order.
The Jeepster Commando is significant in Jeep's history despite its relatively short production run. It bridged the gap between the early military-derived Jeeps and the later, more refined recreational vehicles now called SUVs. The Commando also offered diverse body styles and off-road capabilities contributing to the evolution of the Jeep brand and wide variety of models. By the 1970s, the market had shifted to larger-sized four-wheel-drive vehicles.
If you're interested in continuing the work already begun on this Jeep or drive it as it is, come by MotoeXotica Classic Cars today to check it as a possible project vehicle candidate.
