1969 Chevrolet Chevelle SS396 Tribute
In 1969, the SS396 was offered in three engine variants, each with much more horsepower than the standard V8 models. There was the L35 with 325 horsepower and 415lbft of torque, the L34 with 350 and 415, and the mighty L78 with 375 horsepower and that same 415lbft of torque and a solid cam. There were a number of exterior cosmetic cues that also graced the legendary muscle car that is the Chevelle SS396.
For consignment, a 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle SS396 tribute showing 74,313 miles, but the true miles are unknown due to a PA title exemption. There weren't any unique body panels to the SS396, so creating a tribute car is simply a matter of installing the right engine and those cosmetic embellishments. This owner opted for an MSD fuel injection system.
Exterior
Classic A-body lines define this generation of muscle car and this one is a standout in two stage LeMans Blue accented with a black side stripe, black vinyl top, and 15-inch Magnum 500 wheels with black inserts. And yes, the light panel in back is also appropriately black and home to the iconic SS emblem between muscular tail lights and two exhaust tips spread wide. Up front, the twin dome hood represents a field mark for an SS and while your grandmother's Chevelle looked similar, it didn't carry the SS badge on the grille. The tires on board are staggered sized, presented with letters out, and have a date code of mid 2025 and still retain their nibs. Overall, paint and trim are excellent. Imperfections include edge and body chips, inclusions, bubbling, surface rust at the door jamb corner, and a gap issue on the left front fender to the door.
Interior
Clean classically styled black vinyl door panels lead to tall black buckets and a rear bench also in just about flawless condition. A three spoke sport steering wheel leads to a clean dash with green lit Dakota gauges in stock locations and the center contains an AM/FM/Cassette radio and air conditioning lever panel. There is a Bluetooth amplifier under the dash hooked to the speakers and the controls are in the console. A blue lettered indicator panel lives under the horseshoe shifter in the center console and blue embroidery dresses the black carpet mats over black looped carpet base and all is clean. The headliner and trunk keep pace with a show ready presentation.
Drivetrain
It's a clean 396ci V8 under the hood, according to our consignor and is fueled by MSD Atomic EFI over an Edelbrock intake manifold. It's mated to a TH400 3-speed automatic transmission routing power to the 12 bolt rear axle with 3.31 gears and Positraction. Headers are on board.
Undercarriage
Clean driver quality is found underneath along with a new FlowMaster stainless steel exhaust system, newer coil springs, and power disc brakes on all four wheels.
Drive-Ability
A pleasing exhaust note is emitted from the big V8 and we grab the horseshoe and move it rearward to find the Drive position, then lapping the Chevelle around the test loop where it performs well and does everything right! We note all functions work as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
One of the most respected tributes in the muscle car world, Chevelle SS396 are faithful clones to an iconic muscle car, real versions of which are fetching huge money. Here's one you can drive with a bit more laissez faire, but be sure to insure it like the muscle car it represents! Now you can have your cake and eat it too!
